Anybody playing Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3? I'm not the biggest fan of Anime (I love it, just not seen enough to call myself a big fan), but the sequence at the start of the demo put me in mind of Haibane Renmei - if those kids had to defend their town from some invading imperialist army. Also the coloured pencil style seemed so fresh. I don't normally go in for strategy games, especially turn based stuff which is odd as I went through some dark days of Advanced Wars addiction. So from a proper n00bs point of view this is a really excellent game. It does feel like a cross between AW and an anime (with some DS style conversation boxes thrown in) - at times playing it on my Samsung HardGay-Ready TV with surround sound feels like overkill, but the more polished parts of the game really shine bright with a decent setup. I've enjoyed getting to know the different personalities of my squad, who works well together and who is best suited to certain types of terrain, its funny how you can proper hate on somebody as up beat as Auntie Yoko for being such a useless whore with her lancer, yet end up adoring the shocking homosexual stereotype that is Jann, even going well out of your way to keep that HENCH queen from dying! Much like Haibane Renmei it has really taken me by surprise. I'm just past Chapter 7, which is a rather big pussy filter and can't wait to see where the story leads me to next.
Valkyria Chronicles

yup, i got this when it first came out and got stuck on chapter 7, but went back to it earlier this week, and have been making steady progress again. on chapter 11 now, which looks like another tough one, only had a little try at it, purely to do a bit of scouting (cheating?), i'll try and do it properly next time.
enjoying it though, but i have to keep reminding myself that its a strategy game, so i dont get really annoyed by people missing easy shots, or crouching enemies having silly defence... even though i'm 2 foot away shooting them in the face! its easy to forget that there are other factors to take into account apart from just aiming properly.
the story took a surprisingly bleak turn recently too, with concentration camp storyline. a strange mix with the magical elements and flying pig. and yes, jann is brilliant. but its very tempting to fill the entire roster with cute anime chicks. edie being a favourite.
I'm interested as to how the aiming and turn based stuff interact. Is aiming just a proxy for target selection?
Sort of. It can distinguish between headshots and bodyshots though.
Huzzah!
Finally got to play through the demo of this and I'm going to pick up the full package when I can. What a beautiful game and a great little twist on the turn based strategy genre
Looks like there are some dl mission packs available too. Nice to see Sega pushing out a totally original game too. Something which is far too rare these days.
