Train Simulator: Kyushu Shinkansen

Yes-Asia surpassed themselves with this one. It was shipped in the early hours of Tuesday morning and arrived today!!

This has the potential to be one of the most boring train sims ever! Well, at least the first option of a non-stop 120+ Km run of the whole main line. Most of the time travelling at over 240 km/h. You get video footage for the view out of the cab. Stopping from speeds of up to 260 km/h is soemthing of a challenge so a train that stops at some of the intermediate 3 stations would be marginally more exciting. It does take a few kilometres to stop!!

There is a second type of train in the game which does more stops. This has the added challenge of not only having the speed limits but in some cases a maximum speed that is lower than them. My one run was aborted!!

There is also a DVD video disk, but I have yet to try that.

I had another go at the slow train and this time managed to keep my speed down suffuciently to get to the destination. Must be around 30 km non-stop at speeds up to 130 km/h. At least this journey was all in the open (the 125 km one consisted of rather a lot of tunnels).

At least you can play it in demo mode so that you can look at the countryside.

Edit...

Doh! The other numbers were the next speed limit value. They flash faster as you approach them. I now have no idea why my first attempy was aborted on that slower train!!

My mates just got the new Densha on PSP and he says it's the business, proper 3D graphics, mini games and a decent scoring system. Having played the first Densha+Train Sim on the PSP I find the video somewhat off putting. I think the game looked and played better with its rather ropey 3D graphics.

I have both the PSP titles. The graphics do look good in the latest (pretty much a re-vamp of Densha Da Go! Final. There is something about the real video though.

I just bought Densha Da Go! Shinkansen (off someone) and that uses generated graphics. They are very detailed but do suffer from a lot of pop-up. I think that is a different line though to the Train Simulator though the train type is in both games (with some extra types in Densha Da Go!

I am currently awaiting the delivery of the first two Train Simulator titles from Yes-Asia which will then mean I have four Train Simulator titles and four Densha Da Go! titles on the PS2! Plus the two on the PSP.

Laughing out loud that's a lot of train you got there. I love the controller, I've got the one with the footpedal for the horn and a little recess in the top which I assumed was a cup holder (DOH!) Thankfully Cacky put me on the straight and narrow with that, apparently it's for a stopwatch. The stopwatch must be the ultimate Densha' accessory, not sure where you can pick them up from though.

I've managed to survive on just the dualshock. Which controller do you have?

It can get confusing with Train Simulator Kyushu Shinkansen as the brake and power are on different sides for the two train types in the game.

I have yet to complete the long slow option on that game in manual mode. I need to find a spare 60+ minutes to complete it. That plus watching out for the two killer speed limit changes and no ATC. 85 km is a long way to go (with 4 stops) at speeds of up to only 130 km/h. At least there is some interesting scenery as you get an uninterrupted view of the Japanese countryside. You even get to "drive" on the coast (sea one side and cliffs the other in one place!). The insect strolling up the windscreen at one point was a surprise.

How many train games do you have then?

I think it's this one

I've only got two games. 2 Pro on the PS2 and the first PSP game. I've barely scratched the surface to be honest. I'm notoriously bad a focusing on a game long enough to do it justice. Sad

My main problem with the games is unlocking everything (not a problem with the Train Simulator games).

That is the controller that Yes-Asia do for £74 odd!!

Really!

A mate of mine brought it back from Japan a couple of years ago. I had no idea it was that much to import. I'm pretty certain it's that one it certainly has the foot control and the little light on it. Looking at the recess now it's obviously not for holding a drink >_< .

It would have some problems with some of the game (well Shinkansen anyway) as there are 13 levels of power and 7 levels of braking plus the EB!
