The Viewtiful query

I was thinking of possibly expanding my small PS2 collection with some heroness but I'm not sure how it fares compared to its Cube counterparts? Though the prospect of playing as Dante might be enough unless someone says otherwise.

I would say the PS2 is still worth it for Dante alone, but if comparing the two version, I would say the cube version is still the superior verson. The cube has slightly superior visuals but more important has the better controls, it just feels a whole load better/responsive dishing out pain on the cube pad than the DS2 pad.

Saying that, I would still buy the PS2 version for the extras (mentioned above) and because it's still an awesome game.

I've just come off of a 3 hour Joe love in (cube version). And I have some questions.

1. Do peeps use the dpad for movement as I'm finding this more responsive than the wiggly stick

2. What is the deal with Joe upgrades?

3. Why is this game so darn good?

Nien - Stick only, only thing I refuse to use is the C-Stick for Zoom, B button all the way for that.

Quote:

2. What is the deal with Joe upgrades?

Which ones? - a couple examples would be;

Viewtiful Forever - While in Slow and Joe's in the middle of a Matrix dodge, Zoom-In. Joe will explode into a pose and damage all enemies nearby.

Ukemi - this is a safe fall, hit Zoom when you just hit the floor after being knocked down and you flip back up immediately. You can it in realtime or use Slow while falling to make the timing easier. You notice the hearts come off when you hit the floor on when you take the hit? - Try safe-falling and see what happens Wink

Quote:

3. Why is this game so darn good?

If you look at the label next time you wash it you see it's made from 100% pure Hoff(TM).

We gotta hook up for a Worshipful Joe session!

About the two versions, either is essential - the PS2 version may not be as lush as the Cube, and the pad doesnt have that same Joe feeling the Cube one does....but it doesnt matter because Dante's in it.

VJ needs player to learn all moves correctly, understand Hero-timing Smile Game is full time investment too because player needs to be well practiced to play corrrectly. It is not hard and practice makes game easy, it demands full attention. It is a clever game but not one a player can do well with casual play (3 hours!)

But I own up to not completing it properly! My RGB cable is faulty, I can not play in B/W Sad

my brain might snap if I tried Vjoe and God Hand within minutes of each other.

I never managed to integrate the Zoom into my play very well at all. It may have been faffing with the C Stick... I basically got addicted to that building before you met Hulk Davidson... Don't think you had Zoom at that point.

JibberX

JibberX's picture

Posted: Fri, 13/10/2006 - 09:21

It's all about finishing Normal so you can start again with all of yu0r Joeness ready from the beginning. I'm addicted to Davidson's hotel aswell (it's the only one I've put up on YouTube so far), infact any of the early stages with a full set of abilities is pure carnage and far too good to be legal.

I couldnt get my head round Zoom when they initially show you the Tutorial and tell you it's on the C-Stick. That's blatantly THE worst way to use it - think of it as a shift key on B Button and it'll flow perfectly and become essential very quickly.

Everyone up in this thread is Viewtiful!

Playing through VJ until I finally took down the last level boss on V-Rated was without doubt the best time I've had playing videogames.

Now I know VJ2 doesn't get as much love, but Clover Studio's had me under surveillance during the whole of that period (observed my dedication to the art of Heroness) and discovered that I no longer had the amount of free time needed for another sprawling adventure.

Thus The 5th Chamber was created.

I could honestly rinse that for the rest of my days and never EVER get bored.

It's the amount of heroness on these boards that made me fire up Joe the other night and really sink my teeth into it for the first time.

I totally agree about the c-stick zoom, it's completely redundant, B button is where it's at. I was getting my arse handed to me by the chopper at the end of level one, so I went back and started on Kids difficulty (I know lame), but I think that is actually helping my game to improve and will save me from having to work out puzzles in Adult mode later. I got through to the hotel on Kids without needing to use a credit, not sure how far through the game that is, but it's plain sailing at that difficulty. I'm not rinsing every stage yet, only clocking some Viewtiful ratings. I mostly lose out on V-points which I assume is style related.

I'm struggling with the chopper on Adult though I can get him down to 25% health, but I'm obviously missing a trick. I know I need to get in close when he launches missiles or have the screen cleared of SEBs as the missiles lock on to the nearest enemy. I actually fell through the staircase once and was able to walk around under the stairs (odd).

I know I can do better. I might switch to using the stick as I find myself jumping and ducking unintentionally with my fat thumb on the dpad Laughing out loud

One question for the Joe elite. Is there a cue to tell you whether the pink spinning worlwind enemies are going to attack high or low? I notice you can prempt the attack by guessing a direction, but I'm guessing there's some visual or audio clue I'm missing to get it right 100% of the time.

Madbury

Madbury's picture

Dont play Kids Mode man - you'll miss most of what makes this game great and end up finishing it, diminishing your drive to play the real game even further!

You are missing a trick with the Helicopter -

1. It can only fire diagonally fowards with the machine gun, so just stay under it.

2. When it releases enemies at you, dodge-stun them and then punch/kick them AT the helicopter. Two or 3 hits is all it takes, once you get Slow+Zoom+punch you can kick a stunned enemy into any flying vehicle in the game and then all following hits with Slow+Zoom+punch will take about the same damage again.

So just run at the thing - let it fire while you're under it. It drops the enemies - stun them - then punch them at the helicopter. Remember that Punches will send enemies in a + shape (vertical or horizontal) and kicks a X shape (diagonals).

They have the same markers as regular enemies - just let them spin and then either duck or jump depending if the marker is high or low. Also note that if you are surrounded by opposing markers - hit Zoom twice to quickly Zoom in then out - this will throw them out of whack so you can easily dodge.

You can use pre-cognition to instantly stun enemies, but seriously leave it for now until your Heroness is fully awakened!

Cool,

I figured the helicopter would be something to do with the enemies. I'm not utilising them correctly then. I fugured out the + and X slow punch and slow kick moves, so I probably would have figured it by accident eventually.

I will ditch Kids mode and start again on Adult Smile, besides Kids really wasn't pushing me.

I did come to a sort of epithany this morning over breakfast. I realised for the first time that I'm actually not shit at these games. I've always had a sort of mental block telling me I couldn't play this type of game to a level where I could be pleased, or rather proud of my performance. Last night made me realise that there is heroness inside me I just need to dig deep to find it and then nurture it.

Henshin a go-go baby!

Wonderful! - please tell me you threw the table over and gazed at your hands with a face of shock and awe - PLEASE!!

You may undergo some changes - but dont worry, it's normal. For example even while indoors your long flowing garms will billow int he wind (even if there isnt any). Suddenly - standing like this while waiting for the bus may start to seem perfectly natural;

Whenever I feel my Heroness awaken I jump-kick random people walking past my flat, just to be sure.

Shit man you need to get one of Saur's Heroness Cables. Played against Alastar, lightening came out of the TV and melted my eyeballs.

They really shouldn't have had Kids Mode on VJ at all, let alone that Revised version that has Sweet Mode. Anybody caught playing either of them should be schooled immediately! The helicopter is tough because it wont allow you to progress until some of your Heroness has been awakened - basically use the enemies as weapons. Damn it I need to go home right now and play VJ on Ultra V-Rated o_O

Its the Japanese version that came out (can't remember if it was at a budget price) called VJ Revival which featured a difficulty mode below 'Kids' called 'Sweet'. I would hope it was aimed at pre-schoolers.

I find it hard tonight but I am experimenting with the fighting so I do not mind. Zoom seems to make game easier. Red hot one hundred is very cool. I play through Hulk's place the once and got killed but then played it again from save and fighting was different, I use lots of zoom this time and got a bonus for not getting hit Smile I fight Hulk and win!

I think Saurian said he have save for each level. I do same and already do better on one save and have lots of V-points for more moves.

I know the vid your talking about - I had to use that in the end cos he was raping me on V-rated. Once you see the meth though its just a matter of listening out for the audio and hoping your thumbs respond fast enough! I havent posted much up for Viewtiful Joe yet - but here's what I have;

Charles III - Voomerang/Shocking Pink instant pwn -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKCXmOzXvgc

You hold down punch for Voomerang and Kick for Shocking Pink. Manipulating time changes the effects, Voomerang has a two stage charge. The Voomerang really comes into it's own when you fight against Another Joe - when he splits up into multiple images just fire off a Voomerang which will home in on all the images keeping you safe.

Movement, enemy setups and combo methods -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_YpZxIC69o

You guys are more than likely way in advance of this but I did a write-up for Eurogamer which goes into detail about screwing with the movement;

Spagmasterswift

Yeah man - Smile

It's marked, marked - opposite, opposite.

So suppose for example the markers are up then down - the whole thing will be up, down, up down.

If you get another way such as down, down - the whole sequence will be down, down, up, down.

The variation of these enemies that carry guns - just give em one punch to make them drop the gun then they act EXACTLY like this initial type.

I find out something else in that if I slow as enemy is going to attack, he show move so I know how to position Joe for attack. Suddenly I find 'hard' bad guys very easy like the yellow suit men Laughing out loud

All the different bad guys have their own ways of attacking, but the game will always let you know how to evade by giving you markers.

Like with those big yellow suit baddies - when they shout, they jump over you soon after. So duck down when they shout, then let them jump over you - stand behind them and (Slow + zoom-in + down + punch) - for rapid uppercut. This kills them VERY quickly!

The Heroness can awaken in any creature!
