aka Resident Evil 4: Mercenaries: The Game published by SEGA (!!!)

http://www.bizarrecreations.com/games/the_club/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOOFlXJGd5s - system explanation, includes combos and multipliers and all that stuff

The PS3 demo is up on the UK PSN, demos for XBLA and other regions of PSN should be appearing soon, and the full game is being released on the 8th of February. Is anyone else hyped for this?

Despite being down on this game when I originally heard about it. After reading a bunch of previews I'm now hyped for it. It sounds exactly like the sort of fast paced intense score based shooter that I was lamenting the demise of in another thread.

This is essentially Outtrigger2 and I loved that game for its pace and focus on score attack. BRING IT ON.

Hopefully they will have spent oodles of time working the setups for us to go and perfect.

Regardless of how good it is, I'm expecting to see a number of reviews where the reviewer 'doesn't get it'. Much like no-one really understood Outtrigger and what it was trying to do.

I also expect to see a few preowned copies popping up shortly after release as I'm sure many people will have the same missconceptions I had about this game.

It's like Resi 4's The Mercenaries only not quite as special. I love what I've played of it so far.

EDIT: Just noticed Mr Peckerston's comparison. LOL.

There is a 1.4Gb demo on PAL Live reet noo.

I'm not sure that taking Outtrigger out of its 90s psuedo scifi, rolling it up in brown and HDing it, is gonna sit well with 'castphiles... but I am game.

Although I have vaguely got horribly bored of killing things with guns as a general concept, that really doesn't get me out of bed in the morning.

ok yeah, demo'd it up... I reckon its Mads' cup of tea, it really is Outtrigger 2: Grunge and Swearing edition.

It has the potential to be quite entertaining, minus the grunge and the swearing, it's got the MSR bronze, silver, gold thing going for it, a finite amount of level types and objectivity stuff... all appears to be tightly focused to me.

Wierdly though, for a game that relies on precision aiming, it starts with auto aim on, so you can't hit much freestyling it.. still its an easy turn off... I haven't been round FPS games much on consoles, but pressing back and Y reverses Y axis on the fly, which might give an idea as to where the game is coming from.

So, I reckon, Outtrigger 2, BizarreCreations-o-grade-playing-system-thing.... interested to hear what folk have to say about this. Gonna have another bash, see if I am totally wrong.

So you kill people, in the head preferably, kill someone else the combo rises, look for Skull markers, they act as a kinda kill, but where there are no people, a kinda lull kill... each level on the mode I am playing in the demo has a totaly arcade like predescrible appearance of people and triggers for the appearance of people, they just move around a bit.

So if it is genuinely well and tightly designed on the level front, and you can get over the presentation issues... it should be rockin'.

But do you like it? I can't tell.

I can't tell either. I'm so fed up with killing things, I find it vaguely distasteful these days. That's why I go for Sega Rally / Driving games over trying to work out the most efficient way to kill someone.

But this game has a COMBO METER. A genuine gaming catch 22 for me.

Thinking about it, I'm not too bothered by beating people up / jumping on goombas etc etc maybe its guns, or maybe its just staring at a crosshair.

Either way, I am slightly more compelled to play this, over playing a bog standard cookie cutter FPS.

If the people I shot left coins / tokens like in Outtrigger I might be happier?

On further ponderings, I don't think it is like Outtrigger... I can't put my finger on it.

Plus they were terrorists so it's alright to kill them.

Have you played The Mercenaries mode in Resi 4 (probably not as you don't like the series)? The Club is very, very similar.

It seems painfully vacuous and uninteresting to me. It is perhaps interesting concept, but it really is just a murder simulator - much less so than a standard FPS-with-a-plot or a lightgun game.

Murder simulator? *chuckle* Are you Jack Thompson?

Its a good point though, ResiMerc demands you kill as many 'zombies' as you can, but The Club has you doing it with humans with no explanation as to who they are or why its 'ok' to slaughter them for high score gainz...

There's no moral underpinning, that's true. I take offense to the term 'simulator' though, there's nothing here that could actually teach you how to kill.

Laughing out loud

The mode I've been playing is the straight up score chaser, and its quite refreshing in its score chaseyness... try getting silver on the default single player mode, the name escapes me... you then start to see the people paterns and placements similar to that of a shooter, although in a slightly more wishywashy 3d fps kinda way...

Other than actually killing real-ish looking people, in real-ish looking environs, it could easily be a game from the DC, y'know if it had more knee high boots and neon.

I think this is where something like TeamFortress2 makes a decent choice, its arguably more fun because its comical and you can disassociate, with the real-ish and non super deformed design, or lack of quazi futurish design, it feels slightly distasteful.
