I do have some reservations about this, mainly due to my utter hatred of ninja gaiden BUT it does look so f**kin' awesome. Actually I'm really blown away by it, it's like the bastard love child of devil may cry and the previous metroid games. The direction they've taken is really unexpected, its been awhile since i've been this surprised by a newly announced game.
It's Metroid which already gets me harder than Chinese maths - bring it on.
Special lolz are reserved for the usual fucknuts around the web who are already moaning that it's not 'proper' Metroid - they'd have moaned if it stayed the same, moan now that it's different. Off with their heads, the lot of 'em.
They can all collectively eat a giant dick. Games would be SO much better if the medium didn't have such a braindead audience - Samus + kickoff? I'm in!
This is SO far up my street you can see my house!
Watching Samus kick the shit out of aliens made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Plus how the hell do they know "it's not proper Metroid" - the trailer barely showed anything!
Its pretty funky that they've decided Metroid is worth another pump. I don't know enough about Team Ninja to know where that idea comes from, in terms of gaming lineage all I have in my locker is Ninja Gaiden...
Its unusual for Nintendo to slap a franchise out to any old chump (cough Rare). There's bound to be a Nintendo dude sitting on the edge of every desk in that Team Ninja office eh... but still, its freaking me out a bit.
There's definetly a great pool of talent over at Tecmo - they just need a shove in the right direction. I'm pretty certain Nintendo policy now dictates that a gun is to be held against the head of every 3rd party staff member while working, it's come a long way since the days of Rare *spit*.
I'm pretty sure I read an interview with Retro studio once where they guy said that someone from Nintendo (might have even been Miyamoto, can't remember) was all up in their shit every 5 minutes when they were working on Prime - makes sense really.
The thing that's stunned me most about reactions to these E3 announcements is the collective 'meh' from certain quarters - do these people not even like games? I mean seriously, with the amount of titles on display from every company, they can't even find a single one to get jizz happy about?

"Man, Metroid: Other M looks cool and all, but all those perspective switches and intense action sequences are just too much for me to handle, can we slow it down and do Prime 4.0 instead? I will probably not be able to pull off those crazy combos either, maybe we can make it a QTE throughout?"
Change and complexity is not desirable in some circles.
I suppose the Shadow Complex referencing isn't all surprising, considering how much of a unashamed metroid rip-off it is (even down to the scanning), its a pity that 3D nature of the game was largely superficial and dressed in a generic/shite world.
How they handling 2D/3D in Other M does sound far more promising. With all this talk of metroid, I think its time to replay the prime games again. Being wii-less means I've still got corruption to play aswell, I'll probably overdose on metroid when I finally get a wii.
I've not touched Corruption yet. I'm about, or was, halfway through Echoes. I think trying to get back in now will be nearly impossible. I may have to start the whole of Echoes from scratch it's been so long.
Been avoiding everything.... just kinda hoping Nintendo wont let anything substandard out, assuming its going to rock in that crazy classy Nintendo way.
The Eurogamer review is positive. Interesting that they seem to draw comparisons with Super Metroid, rather than the Prime series. Looks like there is a fair amount of the normal Team Ninja tits and arse to get through sadly
Saw a great / odd cinematic where they've legitamised the stories of Metroid, Metroid 2 and Super Metroid with meshing the in game action and over produced CGI and voice over, its a really interesting idea.
I was on the Nintendo Channel, but I am sure its knocking about... the general gist is its a continuation of those games stories and Prime isn't mentioned.
To be frank, I've never paid attention to the story, so seems like fan service there.
Its pretty damn good, they've managed to make whatever this game is, fun.
That's the overriding vibe... funness.
It comes from the same part of the Nintendo brain as Geist and Metroid Prime... where its just outside there sphere of influence or knowledge, but somehow they've got a team together to wrangle something together that's a really well executed something.
It's sort of effortlessly excellent.
I'll have a think about the mechanics of the thing, but its fun.
It's definitely a Metroid game... in the same that Metroid Prime became a Metroid game... can't say fairer than that really.
The "cinematic" 3rd person / side scrolling hybrid works really well, the superficial character animations whilst vaulting around shooting things really helps with engaging you, just the character vaulting over things as you walk around is good fun. The depth and dimensionality of the levels is interesting, and you'd expect the floating aroundness of the levels would be crap, but with the implicit lock on of the weapons, it actually frees you up, as the lock on is very obvious.
Skipping into the FPS mode for missiles is a good gameplay choice, as is the looking around, and building atmosphere... the regen of ammo and health is an interesting and reasonable mechanic too, holding the wii remote vertically and holding A can add a nice tier of tension when you are noobing a battle... and the battles themselves are really engaging, with the perspective you have the monsters are nice and big and interesting.
Every so often you are subjected to some slightly fat fingered exposition which is entertaining, but just a bit crap, but those events are few and far between, but do offer enough exposition to drive the "story".
So yeah, I finished this... and its quite linear and not so "massive" or "abosorbing" as you'd hope... You know in Ocarina in Time when the whole game starts, then starts again with the leaving the forest... well I was expecting that to happen here, but... it just finished... it never really gets going.
Its a nice execution of the 2.5d game, the pseudo lock on and the fps missile firing works well... but it never really lets loose. Some of the environments are amazing, the holodeck stuff is really good, and the kind of imaginative stuff that should be done in games, the visual design and art direction is also ace.
Some of the game mechanics needs a bit of tweaking, there is a charge blast animation death kill thing I never really got comfortable using, and, well, the tactics against some of the enemies was clever etc etc.
Watch out for Sean Bean and David Beckham, their cameos are excellent.
This may be of interest, I have just collected all the power-ups and "Hard mode" unlocked. You are limited to 99 energy and 10 missiles and it can be challenging because some hits can kill you in an instant - I'm using Sensemove at every opportunity. The recharge ability is essential and introduces tension when you're trying to use it in the midst of a battle (as you often have to). It's exciting so far and it's nice to see that they've tuned the mode for skill and not the number of power-ups you have accumulated.
In short, it feels like they have used a low percentage run* as a template and crafted a good game mode out of it. It's a far better experience than normal and possibly the best alternative mode they have had in Metroid game.
Every defeated enemy feels like a small victory, especially the moments when you have breathing room to fire missiles which do more damage, or jump on top of an enemy with a charged beam. You are gaining something from taking those risks.
Don't you dare! That looked BANGIN!!1
Didn't think it would amount to much, but I was floored.

Multiple perspectives, wrestling moves into cannon combos and throws!!
Best thing I've seen so far out of this years E3 confs.

Exactly the same feelings here. Very interesting!
The pace of it looks pretty good, hope I'm not too old to keep up with it!

I think a lot of the problems stem from the use of cinematics with actual voice acting, something that Corruption received criticism over.
Personally, I agree with you guys; it looks very interesting and these numpties don't what they are talking about.
If anything, the approach looks more like the more recent 2D games (Fusion and Zero Mission especially), as they were almost Contra-tastic.
Its pretty funky that they've decided Metroid is worth another pump. I don't know enough about Team Ninja to know where that idea comes from, in terms of gaming lineage all I have in my locker is Ninja Gaiden...

First thing that came to mind was Viewtiful Joe, then when it went FP I was thinking Killer7.
I'm blates in day one on this!

Releasing on June 27 in the US.
I still can't afford a wii, I'm going to have to resort to thievery to support my metroid addiction.
Funny, I've read a few impressions that use Shadow Complex as the frame of reference.
Other M sounds utterly mental... organic 2d to 3d fps game indeed. INSANE.
I suppose the Shadow Complex referencing isn't all surprising, considering how much of a unashamed metroid rip-off it is (even down to the scanning), its a pity that 3D nature of the game was largely superficial and dressed in a generic/shite world.

Dudes, Other M is out in PALand on the 3rd.

If nothing else it should be interesting to see how the first- and third person cameras work together.
Personally I'm not keen on them stripping away the mystique of the character, if there was any.

So you have to grind through the single player, get all the blobs and then you get the real game?
It's silly, but the reward is great.
