There's certainly a game in there this time. The into the screen stuff somehow plays better than I remember it from Sonic Adventure. I'm less keen on the 3derisation of the classic 2D sonic levels, but there's nothing broken about it from playing the demo.
I was showing Max Billy Hatcher the other day. Now that is a delightful little Sonic Team game that deserves a sequel.
I'm so late with this stuff. Through November I'm writing another guide so I'll miss the launch of Skyrim and Ultimate MAHVAL too T_T
It does look like they've finally made a solid game out of the 3D Sonic rollercoaster. Looking forward to playing this one, I missed Sonic Colours and Billy Hatcher before it.
Sonic Colors is totally fine and these games appear to have been pretty iterative since say the werehog one? In terms of game design engine and so forth. So the only way they can screw this up is if they've over reached. The idea of having the original game in that engine is interesting as from my fairly recent foray into planet sonic the second level is so counter to the rhythm of the rest of the sonic design, it'll be interesting to see how they've done it.
Based on the demo and repeatedly watching Max play it I'm now excited by this game. It feels like a Sega game should. I anticipate some positive reviews of this one.
I think I may need to get this game. Max is hooked on the demo and Bel is enjoying it too!
Of the 2 levels in the demo I actually enjoy the 3d into the screen one more. There's something about the speed and rhythm of it that just clicks with me. That and the way the music fades out a bit when you're boosting. The speed is incredible.
Edge review (iirc) reports framerate issues on the PS3 version, but the demo on the 360 hasn't dropped a frame, so perhaps this is an issue specific to the PS3 version (which would be typical).
Yeah that's how I got mine, bought it off Steam. PC version runs lovely. Only gripe is that Sega have not given it 3D Vision support, instead only supporting side-by-side 3D which I'm sure about 2 people in the world will be able to use.
The game is brilliant though. I've only had time to play Green Hill Zone a few times but the "Modern" Sonic, which I've always hated, is an actual proper game now - and it's a very enjoyable one!
With forced V-sync I'm getting 120fps, this should run in 3D at 60fps no problem. It's the Sega being Sega deal again.
The "combos" are tricks you perform during a jump, flick the control stick from alternating directions (down to up for example) and you'll perform a trick. The tricks build your Boost gauge up so it's well worth noting the specific points where this jump type occurs.
Sweet thanks for that tip on the combos. I've taken a gamble and ordered Sonic Colours for Max instead. It might be a little difficult for him, but it's Sonic, so he'll no doubt love it.
I'll probably pick this up a bit later on when it's dropped in price a bit.
Oh man, Max is getting worryingly good at the modern sonic demo level. He's chaining homing attacks, boosting loads of the level and even sliding at the right places. He is now properly playing the game and it's frightening to watch. He even skips left and right on the 3 rail grind section. He will be 4 years old in March; I think perhaps he is a little too young to be getting hooked on this stuff, but at least he's playing quality games. After he rinsed the Sonic Generations demo last night he asked me to play Daytona (I did have to do most of the control for that one).
Well I've already got him Sonic Colours for Christmas. I don't think I can get Generations yet as that will basically ruin the excitement of Christmas no?
Hopefully the gameplay in Colours is similar enough that he will make the transition without getting upset by the fact that it's not the same game.
Have you played the demo?

I didn't even realise there was a demo!

Generally I am quite keen.
Also keen - what puts me off is the £99 special edition.
£99!?!?
Wow, this actually looks really good... could it be a good Sonic game finally?

I've played the first few areas - its pretty good! There are moments of greatness in there.
It looks great, and lots of nice little references that are more tastefully handled than you might expect.
What has put me off is the mission structure than unravels as you progress, it feels like a mess at the moment.
GAME 'special edition' (not the crazy box set) has exclusive casino pinball table DLC as well, which is fun.

It does seem to be 30fps, which is arse really, but no I haven't seen the 360 version stutter.
The mission stuff has put me off playing any more though.
Steam?

It will be 30fps to support the 3D though yeah. I suspect that is why this is not running at 60.
I would love to play the modern sonic levels on a 3D set as it should give that barrelling into the screen feel.
@Saur have you worked out the combo system on the modern sonic levels? I got a message to say combo +1 but have no idea what I did to earn this.

As long as you are filling him up with Red Bull, everything will be fine.
I've not even touched this, the Zelda's is getting full on attention.... That and Anno 2070,,,,,
Sonic Gens is £25 this week in GAME/GameStation, with the Casino Pinball DLC.
....thanks....
I can't turn that down, whats the DLC? Anyhting pinball perks me up!
Its a Casino Zone themed pinball mini game, which is good fun in itself.
Hmm,
