New Naomi versus shmup developed by GRev (there's a good chance it will get a DC port then). Some nice resources are here:

Looks good. Am I right in thinking this is a sort of strange player vs player shmup highbrid?

Saurian was hyping me up on this last week - he is planning on rinsing it on his trip to Japan, the lucky sod. Anyways, it does look very special indeed and such a brilliant idea for a game (surely its been done before?). Going into Boss mode will be many Shooter fans dream come true I imagine.

Can anyone give any specifics on the gameplay, I've had a look around, but I'm still a little confused. As I said on ntsc I tend to be a bit of a tyre kicker when it comes to shmups (actually games in general). I rarely have the dedication required to truly master a game.

I'll write about it here after I've caned it a while. It's this, Homura and Under Defeat I'm dying to play and will write about them.

Leaving here Wednesday morning so by Friday I should have something to tell.

The only other VS shoot em up I know of is Twinkle Star Sprites which is coming out on PS2 shortly. It's a vertical split screen setup where enemies chained on one side will appear on the other side to mess up the opponent - you can summon boss attacks in Twinkle Star Sprites but not actually transform into a huge screen filler yourself.

Check out Twinkle Star Sprites if you havent played it - it's pure NeoGeo flavour cocaine.

Have yourself a good time in Tokyo Saur, *jealous* Tongue

Twinkle Star Sprites was the only game I could think of along similar lines too. The DC version is really nice, but I've heard the Saturn version is more faithful to the original. It feels like a really addicitve vs puzzler in two player mode, Neo Geo all the way, but this looks quite different.

I'm interested to see how the PS2 port of Twinkle Star Sprites turns out, it has a new sub title so hopefully more has been added to it.

Enjoy Japan Suar, A close friend of mine is going out there in a couple of weeks and I'm going green at the gills just thinking of all the neat stuff he'll get up to. (Hopefully he's bringing me back a PSP, so that is something).

I've been tempted by twinkle star sprites on the ol MVS, but it's one of those Neo games that seems to have retained it's high price, then again I nearly splurged out 70 notes on a Hyper64 and Samurai Spirits Warriors Rage earlier today, before I had to slap myself and remind myslef that a) I'm shit at fighting games and b) I'm getting married in a few months and can't afford it Sad or should that be SmileLaughing out loud

Waa gwaan you manz - I`m up in Tokyo having a wicked time (apart from some seriously irritatingly gormless Amerikajin staying in my hotel...)

Senko no Ronde roxXx HARD!!!

It`s a mad mix of manny games accross genres - it SO could have been a massive mess but they`ve pulled it off beautifully. It`s a shoot em up, it`s got command motion attakks like a 2D beat em up mixed in with a movement system similar to Virtual On in that when you dash or do command attacks you are committed to them and vunerable within that animation set - GORGEOUS animation BTW, unbelievably smooth, stylish and well defined from the moment you put a credit in.

I`m getting pwn3d REALLY HARD by the players up in Shinjuku and Akihabara so I`m gonna go over by one of the quieter Sega Hitech Land arcades to train up as I`m getting raped everytime due to vunerable movement style.

The way it works i almost like Virtual On, Dash button on it`s own activates a shield, then as you hold it you can move slowly while in guard - as your shield meter depletes. Hold a direction and tap dash and you`ll shift quickly in that direction, dash can be cancelled by hitting any other direction plus dash again, this is what makes it like Virtual On, you have to be careful with movement and try to minimise them vunerable frames.

The other 2 buttons are for main and sub weapons, directional commands plus either or both of these buttons activate special moves, 3 are listed in the instructions for each character but there are blatantly more. These command moves unleash pure bullet hell at your opponent!

You hit all 3 buttons to transform into a HUGE boss! This is such a rush - after the transformation you get even more special moves whih when you buss them fill the screen with pure last boss madness! It`s a proper power trip!

Gonna duss now - we havent spent that much time in the arcades yet, but we went down Sega Sports Land for some Final Tuned against the sick heads Friday night - my bredrin beat Oshu Akira (one of the famous tournament players) 3-0! XD
UK representin baby! Today is for arcades man - I`m gonna get sick at Ronde and show off on Psyvariar man! XD

Ja na!

Wicked,

This game sounds fantastic. Here's hoping for a DC port or a loc test in London. The command move stuff sound really well implemented from your description. Blending of genres is usually difficult to pull off, but it seems that G-Rev have nailed it.

How long are you over in Japan for Saur. We'd like to see some pics if you have a digicam. Smile

check this video out! Look at the cheekyness of the tactics. XD They activate their Boss mode on the last few seconds to stop the timer and give thier opponent hell and give them little to no chance to attack back because the time will run out. Laughing out loud But as you can see its totally possible to survive a boss barrage, and even destroy it! Your energy replenishes when you come a boss, but your energy seems to drain much quicker when hit, so more dangerous than normal it seems.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv2RdM4XNg8&eurl=

(^^ The dude has like 45 match videos, they arnt very clear, but they are good enough to get the general idea of the game across. Laughing out loud I watched them all ages ago. Tongue)

So much going on in terms of defence and attack. See that guy shooting off those red rings to hide behind for a shield? He then trys to get closer to the opponent in the breathing space he has created by firing off another set of barriers to hide behind, to try and corner the other dude with a hail of bullets. His player also has this move which causes mass explosions around himself to wipe out any bullets coming towards him, look how these two moves make life easier for him against the boss. Shock

Loads of attacks, and bullet patterns on this, and I bet each and everyone of them can be dodged or neutralised. Laughing out loud

That B52 boss. Laughing out loud Thats just PLANE wrong. ;p But as you can see, the other player used that shield to destroy half of the attacks that came towards him and inflict severe damage to it.

Really looking forward to this, such a breath of fresh air gameplay wise, I would never of thought a 1 vs 1 shmup concept could work so well. Im not really good at shmups, last one I really got into was Gradius V (SHH, I like it!), but after a few weeks my brain was getting destroyed trying to get my head round boss bullet patterns, that and those pesky grey and white bullets!

Senko No Ronde intrigues me though, just because of the VS element, I can see myself continually playing this trying to dodge human bullet attack patterns. \o/

About the command moves, as youve played it Saur, what type of command moves really do work on this? Does the way you do them change depending where you are on the screen as well? Like say if you are on the top of the screen, to do a QCF command motion up there, do you have to reverse because of where your character is?

First thing im gonna try is Geese's Raging storm command move! If that doesnt make the whole screen explode...ill be slightly dissapointed. ;p J/K...well, somthing mad is bound to happen surely! Laughing out loud

Yeah man - from what I can remember - command moves change whether you're to the left or right in relation to the opponent (up and down didnt matter I dont think) - Boss mode is overwhelming to begin with, but you soon realise it's a massive gamble because the opponent can slip round to a blind spot and take you apart just as they would against a CPU controlled boss in a shoot-em-up.

I fucking LOVE this game but I aint buying a 360 for it, where's that DC version I deserve!?! I bet if I went out and bought a 360 for this game and get online I'd discover NOBODY else is on it just like with Psyvariar.

I dont see how putting this game on Live is going to stop people simply bowling down the arcade and playing it for pocket change on a better setup against SICKHEAD players.

Famistu have reviewed the game and here are the scores...

Senko No Ronde Rev.X (Xbox 360, Sega): 7 / 9 / 8 / 8 - (32/40)

Good score (not that i needed Famistu's seal of approval tbh!), and the game is out next week! Really feel like importing it and hoping that its region free, but ill guess ill wait till I hear from the Playasia reports if is infact region free, or from other sources.

Oh, and heres a list of achievments for the game too. *Click*

Standard affair, complete with each character and get a certain Score Attack score, but theres also some hidden ones. Wonder how adventurous those secret ones could be, im guessing win rates to be among them, but wouldnt mind somthing like surviving enemy boss attacks x N amount of times or somthing along those lines. Smile

Here's hoping for an Asian release...

How does it do the widescreen Cacky? I've heard they've actually changed the aspect ratio properly as opposed to borders or streatching.

The default setup has borders of a sort...

Though you can turn them off I think. Basically, the widescreen has been done specifically to cater for the port (the whole game has been given a facelift really).

It does look fucking incredible on the 360 actually.

There's a good chance a Chinese release of the game will be region-free. Otherwise there's very little chance it will get a Western release.

Been playing this a lot and the conversion is faultless really. It also works perfectly fine on the pad. It really reminds me of Virtual On though but with far more projectiles on screen. Managed to rank 169th with Mika on my first Score Attack attempt, which is probably not that great. Almost finished all the story arcs for all the characters, only three more to go.

To numb the pain I had to order Under Defeat. That's how badly this region locking is pissing me off. Plus I find out that Steel Dragon EX (still not shipped you Gamestation fucks!) is a borked PAL release (Oh the misery).
