I'm revisiting my Megadrive collection at the moment. I have about 40 games for it and I've recently sorted out a MD2 unit with some switches and an RGB cable.
Purpose of this thread is to find out what MD games you lot reakon are worth taking a look at and to muse over some of my collection and figure out if any of it is actually any good.
So far I've come to the conclusion that I was wrong about Rolling Thunder 2, which I wrongly thought was bobbins, when in fact it is actually pretty damn good. Probably benefits a great deal from the 60Hz switch.
Also I'd forgotten just how much of a bastard Toki is once you get past the first level. Some proper evil level design in there. Nice.
Mystic Defender also deserves a closer look. Wikipedia reveals this as a Sega in-house effort based on a Manga/Anime. Can't be all that bad then, can it?

The Super Shinobi - was my favourite Megadrive game. If you haven't got a copy of that, track it down!
("Super" - not "Revenge of")

I had a thing for Strider, tho the arcade version was my personal fav. Still, I'm sure you have that already

When's 'Wii Carlton' coming out?

Leynos is worth a gander too.
Hello! I found my way here by some google archive of NTSC browsing the retro section so I thought I'd sign up.
Super Shinobi part II is sexy time throughout, it's very similar to the Shinobi games of old and with enough practice you can breeze through it without taking a single hit, but this Musashi is quite a bit more agile, double jumps and moves faster. Personally I feel really good playing this with the shuriken power up intact, ultimate destruction!
Ghouls 'n Ghosts - EVIL, total randomness. It goes to incredible lengths to stop you from going anywhere. Ironically that's where the appeal is.
Welcome OSP
I have Revenge of Shinobi. I assume with the language switch set to JPN and the frequency switch on 60Hz I'll be Super Shinobi'd up. The version I have is on the Megagames 2 compilation cart, not sure it that's going to screw me up or not.
Super Shinobi II is the follow up to that isn't it. I don't have that
I have Strider and it's not bad, but nowhere near as sexy as the arcade original. Still good though.
Cacky, I've never seen that before... I'm guessing that's JPN only, which means a cartridge slot mod to fit the cart in, still that's going to have to happen eventually. I have Leynos on the Super Fami and Valken on the Saturn. Is EX-RANZA essential?

You prolly mean Valken on the SNES and Leynos II on the Saturn (the first Leynos was on the Megadrive you see).
Ex-Ranza also got a US release as Ranger X...
It's very interesting and remarkably pretty for a Megadrive game, not overly "essential" though.
Yeah I always get Leynos and Valken mixed up >_<
Anyway, finished the MD2 mod last night. Actually worked out that my soldering iron had been too dirty and too hot to do the job effectively first time around (resulted in a buggered board and a quick search of ebay for a replacement MD2).
The good news is that I now have a spare case with which to practice a slot mod for accepting Japanese MD carts.
Need to get myself a JPN game for reference now.
I probably should try and sort out a 32X. I have a unit, but no leads. Problem is it seems like a lot of hassle to play only a couple of games. I couldn't believe it when I read the 32X list, so few games on there <40!
Rolling Thunder 2 is drawing me in. I'm getting quite attached to that game now.
I have been playing Shadow Dancer when it struck me, Super Shinobi 2 has abandoned many traits found in the earlier games such as the slower pace and the precision based mechanics - which are more forgiving in this version, so I was wrong by a huge margin! I feel silly for not realising this sooner, it's an early 90's game after all so it would naturally have evolved from its 80's counterparts like other games at the time.
But what a difference, there is so much more... flow in SS2. I don't think this will disappoint in any regard. Anyway, I thought I should to come back and correct my so-called observation before archive or google caches it.
I've been playing SS2 on the PSP Megadrive collection. I badly need to get a copy for the MD
You're right the pace of SS2 does feel quicker. I can leave some of the stupid vehicle sections tbh, but otherwise the game is all good.
I need to get the MD version of Shadow Dancer as it's supposed to have different levels compared to the arcade version, which is nice.
Nothing compares to the original Arcade version of Shinobi though, which I still rack out on my cab from time to time just to keep my eye in.
I agree, they are lost opportunities and lacking in challenge and obstacles, so I would rather just skip to the next level as well.
I adore the MD Shadow Dancer bonus sequence however, collecting 50 points feels so rewarding. Oh, and the game loops so there's incentive to clear it several times in a row, I think the difficulty maxes out on the third. It's not an overly long game either.
