Its been linked all over, I guess Sega's blog db died.

The photos are here:

with some of the background here:

... although there is no where near every Sega title ever.

The story of how these photos came about is stranger the more you think about it, and in fact publishing this stuff at all is pretty stupid.

Supposedly the blog team (whatever they are) moved to a different Sega building and 'discovered' a 'forgotten' Sega archive there, got over excited and took some photos for the internets.

Except... it is obviously not forgotten about as there are games in there which are only a month or two old (jpn Sega Rally Revo). It seems pretty obvious this is some game producer/legal archive, the existence of which is not at all surprising for a company like Sega.

What is surprising is that it is not more complete, and not better maintained.

The blog chumps then had to correct the story to say actually it hadn't been forgotten about, just that not one had told them it existed. They also said they want to suss how to lend the contents out to people... which of course is pretty much the exact opposite of what an archive like this is intended for (complete and near mint condition reference library).

It just reminds you that Sega really isn't Sega any more, and a lot of the people who work there now are naive ignorant chumps.

Some of the pictures are quite nice though, didn't know Virtual-On Marz had a US release.

Firstly, within publishers there isn't a defined "identity". As everyone has worked almost everywhere, this is even true in Japan as the industry has undergone a lot of change in regards to its hiring practices (as in people are hired more from other companies rather than promoted internally). Loyalty almost doesn't exist these days.

This means that people who once worked at Acclaim or wherever will most probably kicking about and working at places like Sega, Namco or...you get the picture.

Secondly, saying that Sega don't maintain a proper legal archive is hardly surprising; as few management within publishing have a clue about gaming.

The reason why these people haven't been ousted from the games industry is down to the simple fact that most gamers don't stick it out and quit early giving these ignorant numpties an easy ride (and the few remaining gamers have an even harder time as they are then the social minority).

Even hiring enthusiastic interns or work experience students rarely helps, as few understand the value of having a well kept archive. In some instances it's even discouraged as it's thought to be too "nerdy".

Oh, the US version of Virtual On Marz truly has frightening dubbing and the translation is pretty awful as well.

Witness the HORROR!

I hear everything there man -

It's absolutely shocking listening to what my friend at EA is going through at the moment. It's not just that he's being undermined ever step of the way due to his knowledge/skills being seen as a threat - it's the double-standards and blatant racism he has to fight through aswell.

I could never keep my cool in that kind of situation, I'd totally lose it. Even when applying at other companies all he gets from them is basically this; "You're really experienced, you definetly have the knowledge and the ability....but we don't think you'll fit in".

Which is pretty much "Nope. You're not the right colour to work here kthnxbai". I've told him time and time again to simply get out of gaming, the only thing that seems to matter in the gaming industry is who you are - not what you can do.

If there's one thing I absolutely cannot fault with the business I'm in now is that these guys are like machines when it comes to making money, they know EXACTLY what they're doing and pull it off every single time. I don't have to concern myself with it - I just keep my part of the machine working great and nobody bothers me.
