Wow Madworld and Bayonetta! Both look amazing. Check the bullets out in bayonetta, they've been scored to split on impact for maximum mess. Smile

Loving the style of Madworld, strip away the graphics and it has the faintest whiff of Godhand about it = WIN. At the end of the day it's all going to come down to the system, but I'm happy to take it on faith that whatever that is, it will be solid gold, or should that be platinum Laughing out loud

Mad World...It's blatantly gonna be a Nex Gen God Hand with added death moves and environmental death!

Bayonetta...a woman WITH A GUNS FOR HEELS! The way that combination works in my mind, is if Capcom gave Zangief a fireball and a dragon punch.

...

*Ponders about Zangief fireballs and SRKS.

A lot of Kamiya's comments are suitably interesting, as he's obviously trying to push things forward somewhat. Admittedly he's doing this in a PR spokesperson capacity but the intent is at least encouraging.

Sega have a four game deal with this lot. I'm hoping they really push these games hard. Titles like Mad World given the right marketing will sell buckets.

The DS title Infinite Space they have in development looks really interesting too. It's a space based RPG. Tthe concept artwork for the ships looks good and feels familiar somehow???

No news on the 4th game.

imho these guys are just about the most interesting thing in games at the moment. Watching them with much anticipation.

All I'm saying is that the ship design looks familiar, but I can't quite figure out what it reminds me of. Games like Ikaruga, Panzer Dragoon Saga and PN03 all spring to mind, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Regardless it sounds interesting. According to the Wikipedia entry the plot is based on an Arthur C Clark story. They will have to get the mood just right to pull it off. No spikey haired orphans please.

Infinite Line has got mecha design by Junji Okubo, the same chap who designed the Vertical Tanks in Steel Battalion. So that's where the visual similarity stems from I reckon:

http://www.gearsonline.net/designers/#okubo

The game is being developed by the same team at Nudemaker as well.

I'm not sure mood has much to do with a Clarke story, as most of his work was very deadpan and more tech focused. It also sounds like it's more of a sidestory to Childhood's End, as human space travel (to the extent present in the game) wasn't present in the original novel.

I liked the film tis all!

I just never knew anyone who hated Danni Glover as much as Saur!

There was loads of great scenes in that movie, the starting with the gang shoot out, DG jumping through buildings after the predator, the Swat team getting CAINED in the meat factory, FLYING DISC, King Willie getting killed and trophied...the skulls in the back of the ship.

I didn't say it was better then Pred 1!

...where the hell is this thread going? xD

Ace boss name on that end of that trailer Frederick Von Twirlnkillar. The carry and hold into the side of the train was grim and I laughed hard when he put some dude in a barrel and threw him into the river.

Not seen anymore of Bayonetta, seen a few screens of the main character and some enemies which look similar to the white knights in DMC4 but thats it.

For Bayonetta's sake (and for the sake of my sanity) I hope there isn't even a hint, not the slightest whiff of DMC4 throughout the entire production. I hate DMC4 so much it gives me POWER!

I honestly thought that DMC3 was the start of a revolution. Where games have mechanics so fucking deep that you'll never be able to reach the peak of what's possible, where the entire game and every single enemy is built outwards from the character's abilites.

Like fuck - all the twatty gamers out there bitch about it being too hard, have no appreciation whatsoever of the mechanics and fall over themselves to recommend DMC4 (which is a complete antithesis of what DMC3 was all about).

It's out very soon you bunch of slutty whore knickers!

I order you all to buy it - but more importantly buy the guide regardless of whether you buy the game or not.

The game is VERY funny and has many gores and bloods.

In all seriousness though, I've read the Eurogamer and *snigger* IGN "reviews" of this game and they both have something in common; neither of them bear anything to do with this game at all.

These people amaze me, that Eurogamer review especially is apalling - half the text is descriptive nonsense about stuff people have already seen in the trailers then he goes on to bitch about the game actually being a game. His only gripe was that the thing has the audacity to expect a little bit of learning from the player, he wasn't able to beat every boss on his first attempt! XD

Sure, MadWorld has it's issues (none of which have been picked up in these "reviews") - but there's also a lot of stuff in there which is actually VERY clever and to my knowledge completely original, again not mentioned in the reviews.

Out end of March for PALand.

I've been tracking the reviews, and very rarely have they yet told me what the game actually is. Just that it is in black and white (and red).

Closest so far is the US IGN review:

ign.com wrote:

Platinum Games has utilized a very simple, but effective control scheme and as a result MadWorld is immediately playable. Jack himself is controlled tightly with the nunchuk's analog stick and pointer functionality is tossed to the side for a combat system that relies heavily on smart gestures. Not waggle, mind you, but simple gestures to effect many of the previously noted finishers. The hulking anti-hero throws vicious punches every time you tap the A button and B-Trigger pulls out his chainsaw, which can be swiped horizontally or vertically with your respective motions. Too often, action games overuse gestures or merely replace buttons with stupid waggle, but neither is true in MadWorld. The controls feel well thought out and responsive, as evidenced by the fact that Jack's primary action, punching, is mapped to a quick button press while his secondary function, the chainsaw, is motion-based. Why more developers don't understand something so simple as this repeatedly befuddles me. Finishers require only simple gestures -- up or down, left or right, and the results are gore-tastic. Nothing's complicated. Everything makes sense.

That's halfway through the 2nd page mind you, of 4 pages, which is a bit....

JibberX

JibberX's picture

Posted: Wed, 11/03/2009 - 12:53

It's brilliant they actually noticed that.

This is the first thing that struck me about MadWorld - the control system is something only the heads at Platinum would come up with. Think about it, how many buttons and levers would you need to control Jack on a control pad? Here are the functions which MUST be individual in order for the MadWorld control scheme to be included in full on a pad;

1. Movement (stick 1)

2. Lock-on
3. Jump
4. Evade
5. Attack
6. Chainsaw
7. Use/Throw
8. Pick-up
9. Taunt

(on a 2nd stick + holding a button)
10. Vertical
11. Horizontal

That's 8 buttons and both sticks (plus combinations of holding different buttons with different stick directions), yet the Remote and Nunchuk allows all of this (plus pause, menu etc) to be included in a manner which is totally intuitive. NEVER do you actually have to think about what button you need to push, or what command does what - it's all completely straight forward.

The motion based commands are brilliantly executed in that they have not gone overboard with it; vertical or horizontal swings, this is all.

The Eurogamer guy goes on about how frustrating it is not to have a block button. What a load of shit. At no point during MadWorld do you need to block, the game's mechanics do not at any point of the game actually require it - all defense is handled via a simple shake of the Nunchuk. Various types of evade are automatic depending on your situation - all you have to do is initiate it via a shake of the Nunchuk and Jack moves accordingly (completely invincible while he's evading).

Blocking is pointless and totally counter to the mechanics of this game. The reason why you have an evade like this is so that dodging an incoming attack and moving to the correct position to score a counter-attack is instant, seamless and performed via just 1 input.

There's nothing wrong with the mechanics they've implemented at all, infact they're very clever. Once you all start playing it then we can talk.

Saurian

Saurian's picture

Hehe. Hope so I need some mind blowage.

re. block and evade. I would have thought that practically any system that has a decent evade mechanic is something people will want to exploit in favour of a block. I guess that rationale extends to fighting in the real world. Provided everything is eiher evadable (is that even a word?) or can be intercepted with a counter move then I don't see that there is a problem in removing blocking.

Madbury

Madbury's picture

Posted: Thu, 12/03/2009 - 12:04

I don't even think it's worth trying to reason with such an idiotic mindset, I'm sure the writer of that "review" was just reeling off a pre-written set of cons they quickly apply to any game when they need to fill space.

Evade is invincible, there's nothing in the game you can't evade - provided you bother to pay attention to incoming attacks or don't blindly walk into hazards there's no problem.

The attack-defense mechanism is very simple and only really comes into play against mid and main bosses. Attacks are clearly signposted and activating an evade in time will automatically move your character through the attack and to a position where you can counter-attack.

That's all there is to it!

Saurian

Saurian's picture

Posted: Thu, 12/03/2009 - 12:07

Word on the street is it kicks off when you play it on Hard, once it's been completed once. AI get all AIy, etc etc. I don't know if AI is a good thing or not, vaguely intelligent enemies can ruin a perfectly good game, with random crap and glitches. Fixed path or incredibly predictable AI on the other hand...

JibberX

JibberX's picture

Posted: Thu, 12/03/2009 - 12:13

I wouldn't call it AI - this is not an FPS where enemies have the intelligence to hide behind objects and attack you intelligently.

This is a scrolling beat em up - the enemies follow extremely basic routines and exist primarily as targets to stab things into. The main thing that changes in Hard Mode is the enemy reactions to attacks - it's similar to what they did in God Hand.

In God Hand when you raise the meter to Level Die the enemies have increased resistance to your attacks, for example they will not launch until you force 'counter' property when you strike. Similar thing here, the enemies will resist your attacks and you have to employ a more advanced fighting style in order to break their resistance.

Saurian

Saurian's picture

Posted: Thu, 12/03/2009 - 13:34

OK so based on the info in this thread I'm assuming this is God Hand in black and white, with more gore comedy and a reworked control system that is built around the remote and nunchuck combo. The little I played of God Hand was brilliant, so that bodes well and the only real issue I had with God Hand (if you can call it that) was that I had to move rapidly between the right analogue stick and the face buttons to get the evade counter mechanic going. Sounds like the Wii controls with the simplified evade effectively get around this 'issue'. I put my crapness down to too many hours of twin stick fps nonsense with thumbs rooted to the wiggly sticks Sad

Madbury

Madbury's picture

Posted: Thu, 12/03/2009 - 13:54

Nope! Laughing out loud

MadWorld is about as far removed from God Hand as you can possibly get - !

God Hand is a 100% pure 3D scrolling beat em up, it's Final Fight with a game system deeper than most 1 on 1 beat em ups.

Mad World is a completely different beast - the fighting system is very simple, it's the scoring system which is like an onion. Every "Eureka" moment you'll get with this game will be down to the scoring system as you try to work out new ways of scoring big.

It's a score-chaser, not a technical beat em up.

Saurian

Saurian's picture

Posted: Thu, 12/03/2009 - 14:50
