Over the past 5 years I've picked up the info on the SCART RGB angle, but I've forgotten some bits.

I have a coupla questions.

I'm gonna need a SCART switcher soon thanks to Dreamcast and Saturn purchases, which, where and how much?

Also I need to aquire a Saturn SCART cable, which, where and how much?

Switches... the metal cased push switch jobbies from Argos are still very good for a tenner.

There is the Joytech AV switcher too, which is alright, but I get more interferance on mine than the Argos switch box. It's also a bit finicky about some RGB signals.

Saturn scart cable... cheapest to grab one off ebay I would have thought.

£5 seems to be the going rate.

I bought a Saturn RGB lead off Ebay (recently purchased a Saturn). Only problem was that it got interference when played through an RGB switch box (all the other consoles are fine in that respect). Worked fine plugged directly into a TV. I have another make of switch box so whether it will be OK with the Argos one, I have no idea.

The Argos one is pretty sound. I have two of them going into a Joytech AV centre and I get no loss of picture or interference from anything. I've had an NTSC Cube, PAL Cube, Modded Xbox, Normal Xbox, PAL PS2 and a modded DC all going through them and they all work fine.

Have you tried a Saturn with them, as I have never had any interference with any other console.

Neeearrrrggghhhh. Plugged in my recently purchase SCART Saturn lead, and its all wrong captain.

First time it has all this disc access style interference across the screen.

Second time the Saturn won't boot, but the power light is really dim.

Third time it wont power at all, and there is a wierd electrical burning smell.

Fourthly the sound starts going mental and I think my TV is going to explode.

Rinse and repeat for a while combined with dark mutterings.

Basically if I turn the Saturn on with the SCART in it wont power, plug it in whilst powered and you get anything from wibbly screen to mental sounds to crashing console, all with interence.

What in the name of AIAI is going on?

Sounds very much like one of the switching voltages is shorting in the scart cable.

Don't plug it in again until you've checked the scart plug.

Pin connections here:

You should look at pins 8 and 16, and test them for continuity against the rest of the pins.

That interference sounds like the sort I had when going through a switch box. Have you tried a direct connection to the TV?

Twas direct in the back... it kinda looks like the black and white bit... but interference is interference!

Have you been able to test your lead. I presume it was described as new (mine was - I bought it earlier in the year off ebay). It was either the RGB I bought, or try the RF lead (not an option in my opinion).

I have yet to try all the games I got with the Saturn. My main concern was to make sure Death Tank 2 worked (on Duke Nukem 3D)!

^^ this

If you can't get it right, send it to me and I'll test it for you, and repair it if I'm able.

Uh oh.

I think the cable fubared my RGB on my Toshiba.

I hooked up my DC SCART in anticipation of Virtua Tennising and it appeared all Black and embossed like the RGB wasn;t working.

Hmmm

So I went back to my Sky box and looked and I was getting all the composite "fuzzing" indicative of it being in composite, so I look at the config of the box and it is indeed set to RGB.....

Bollocks.

So I'm assuming here, I need to do a little more testing, that my TV is RGB deadz0rs?! That a fuse or do I have to bin the TV?

Could be that the rgb switching has gone - are you able to flick to rgb manually?

The outline you are seeing is composite sync only, it isn't using the color data.

No I can't switch manually. Interestingly I can switch manually on the other two SCARTS, from Component to SVideo to Composite on SCART 3 and between SVIDEO and Composite on SCART 2. No manual switching on SCART 1 though.

I hadn't thought the auto switcher had gone, I guess that would have some mechanical gubbins to make it go.

....looking at the circuit diagram.....

If pin 8 sends the switch voltage. It also sends the Widescreen signalling, which appears to be working.... I can't really see which bit might be busted specific to RGB signalling.

So I think, THINK, I need a replacement board, U102A or PB9509A-1, anyone got any ideas where I can buy those?

I opened up the SCART end of the cable, and it all looked clean and nothing particularly bogus. I don't know if its wired right, but the solder etc looked fine.

That would then point to the Saturn? Since the other end is molded.

Could be.

Or maybe your TV just died at that particular moment.

Arrrggghhh, the paradox...!

Well there are a series of tests I could perform to establish that.

The TV dude wants £45 call out or if I lump it round to his gaff, a maximum charge of £55 then he calls me and says he's but a screwdriver through the screen....

I'm thinking just buy another TV and give this one away to cheeriteee....

charity places can't sell electrical stuff I don't think. something about certifying safety.

I'll ebay it for pickup only then I 'spose, then give that money to someone needy.

(I've never really liked the TV anyways)
