A friend has been asking what he should go for, but hasn't really played anything since Mr. Do!
So... what do you reckon is the best system to recommend?
I'm thinking PAL GameCube on the grounds that:
a) it's cheap if they end up disinterested
b) they'll never buy more than 5 games
c) it has some fantastic games for kids and multiplayer
So the question is, which games to suggest? I'm thinking:
- Mario Kart Double Dash
- Zelda: The Wind Waker
- Super Monkey Ball (1 and/or 2)
- Wario Ware
- Resident Evil 4
- Burnout 2
- Ikaruga
- Pikmin 2
- Soul Calibur 2
- Super Mario Sunshine
- Timesplitters 2
- Zelda 4 Swords
If I had to take one current gen console to a desert island with me, this would be the setup I'd choose. What do you reckon?
Would you choose a PS2 or Xbox instead?

Cube, with either Wind Waker or Super Mario Sunshine, and that's it, either one of those, fun for all the family in a n00bish way. My Nephew and attached family really enjoyed just wondering around that town in Mario, because you basically just point mario in a direction and he goes there... simple, game objectives are secondary.
Depends on the breadth of his tastes, really. From your list, seems fairly wide (I wouldn't recommend Ikaruga to anyone who doesn't like being a perfectionist, and is prepared to become very frustrated, for example
)
If like you say he's only getting 5 or so games then yes, the GC. If he's getting 15-20, PS2 all the way, but ONLY a US or Jpn one. Although I don't personally like all of these:
GT4
GTA: SA
ICO
Devil May Cry and DMC3
Shadow of the Colossus (to come)
Katamari Damashii
Gradius V
Psyvariar
Okami
Burnout 1,2 or 3
Ridge V
...the range and choice is just a lot broader. I'd go for a GC if he likes Ninty games specifically and likes the look of Resi 4

If he's not importing, the Cube is the best bet: (PAL PS2 lineup is dire).
Using the seven year old kid next door to me as a barometer, I'd say he should go with the following:-
Viewtiful Joe
Super Monkey Ball
Pikmin
Super Mario Sunshine
Zelda (any)
I'd seriously recommend Donky Konga with bongo's.
That game has managed to get two cynical 40+ women to have a go, enjoy it and think it's great.
Good upper arm exercise on the harder(Gorilla) modes as well.
Anything instantly addictive really, Monkey Ball very good choice Madbury.
Viewtiful Joe may be soul crushingly difficult mind >_<
Alan Moore - i worship thee!
Well, just in the interest of balance I'd go for a PAL PS2, easy to get hold of plenty of choice and to start off you can go for the eye toy and whatever pack floats your (their) boat.
I think we're going to have a sampling session to see what impresses.
I will try to remain impartial...
PS2 all the way, due to the diversity. Though I'd have thought you would have tried the Dreamcast out on him.
Sadly, not
I think at a minimum games need to be available on the high street, otherwise I might have tried...
So far OutRun2 and Super Monkey Ball have impressed the most, Monkey Ball especially.
Good point, in terms of 'bang for the buck' the DC wins hands down. With an outlay of £100 you could get a very nice Dreamcast bundle. I still think the PAL PS2 library is very average, there aren't that many stand-out titles.

Amazing to think that a release title could still be a system seller...
