While Wipeout was downloading I popped into Woolies, stole some pick&mix and bought a quadbike racing game. This was a really big mistake. Not because I got arrested for stealing pick&mix and not because the game is, as you would expect from a quadbike racing game, total rubbish. But because it is so much damn muddy fun that I've hardly played Wipeout (which is BLATES AWESUM). I'm not a big racing game fiend, SuperMarioKart, Burnout and SSX being those that I think most fondly of, and Pure is definitely of that ilk. It just feels beautifully smooth as you drift round these amazing courses or fly through the air from one ridge to the next, with a perfect risk/reward system of back and front flips, as well as a bunch of insane tricks and character specific specials. The soundtrack, however, needs to be turned right off in favour of your own choons, unless you like that WOMAN song which seems to come around all too quickly. As does the commentator and your characters voice, which you will no doubt be replacing with your own as you shout WHAT THE MONKEY HELL, I"M HAVING MASSIVE FUN, I HAD FORGOT HOW GOOD VIDEOGAMES CAN BE, I NEED TO GO TO THE LOO BUT I CANT LEAVE THIS GAME, ITS ACTUALLY LIKE HAVING AN ARCADE IN MY ROOM, I NO LONGER NEED TO SMOKE, I CAN WALK AGAIN, I AM QUAD, etc...

Oooo, this sounds good. Certainly can't justify it at the moment, but if I see it reduced somewhere then I'm in. Is it track based or total freedom checkpoint stuff.
Its track based on the whole, with each track having various paths to choose from, and you often get a good look at these paths far below you while you're zooming through the air bussin P.N.03 poses. The championship sections are split up between 'Race' which requires you to mix tricks for boost and straight racing, 'Sprint' where the track is much smaller and tighter for insane drift racing and 'Freestyle' where combo chains rule the day. Once you have beaten all that lot I think you unlock a Free Mode for all tracks, much on and offline showboating and generally mucking around (unless this is already available and I'm missing the option). A neat thing I should mention is that when you go to select a course you get your friends best lap times scrolling along the bottom. ITS NIIIIIIICE!!1
Trail Mode is Free Mode - they just use different names for it, so basically you unlock tracks that you can have free roam access to as you progress...

When's 'Wii Carlton' coming out?
Sounds good. What's the handling like. Is it arcade style or more sim like. I'm thinking Excite Truck, but with tricks???
The handling is arcade beautiful, probably the best thing about the game tbh, once you get used to identifying how each surface type is gonna effect your quad it adds a whole new level of depth to it. Grass slows you down, best avoided unless you need to shave some speed off before a corner, mud makes you slide, etc. I've yet to use the break (there may not even be one), easing off the gas and using the track to control your speed is all possible due to the handling being damn tight and the level design being play tested to death! Falling out of the sky and landing into a turn you go instantly back into complete control, foot down, boost on lining up the next jump. Drifting around a steep bank the camera adjusts so that you can judge the perfect point to come out of the turn and blast down the hill. They've done a lot of work on not punishing you too much if you come off the side of the track, which doesn't happen often (unlike Motorstorm bikes that made me want to kill things), or stack a jump - you get thrown rolling right back into the action. I don't want to big it up too much, seriously though - IT IS TOO MUCH!!1

When's 'Wii Carlton' coming out?
Downloaded the demo based on spags' impressions. Thought I'd pontificate a bit.
The demo at least has a striking visual similarity to Excite Truck... sawmills and lakes includes... oh and geologically worrying hills too.
Driving wise its quick to engage a slide and nice and phyiscal... I can imagine it being quite fruity on a more challenging race... I pwned the demo... of course
They've made jumping off peaks an intresting enough mechanic to make you have to think at every attempt, added that with the boost jump and your brain is actually engaged!
The stunts are a touch "button-tastic"... they've probably crossed the line a bit in the way they've just had to use all the button available to them for no particular reason... other than making it apparent their are timing considerations to the higher level tricks as risk rewarded through boost gained from other tricks.
Biggest thing for me is the apparent implementation of the ideal 3 tracks in one, no advantage in any except your ability to take advantage of any particular route you might find yourself down... at least that's what I hope. Imagine a triple helixical structure... or whatever.
Still, its almost got that immediacy, control and fun thing nailed... don't know if the full game falls into shops, upgrades and decals...
The demo is worth a look. Especially for the fact that someone has spent alot of time playing Excite Truck to get here, all its missing is semi dynamic terrain, simplification of the stunt mechanics and subtle motion control and you'd be hard pressed to tell the games apart based on the demo.
Just watched a vid of Excite Truck, I see the similarities - looks fun.

Excite Truck is probably the game I've enjoyed the most on the Wii.
Spags, if you've not played Excite Truck you should. It's absolutely immense. The motion control is done so well to. It's hyper sensitive edge of the seat stuff
.
Pure sounds similar, which = WIN in my book (and yes I actually have a book)
___________
We're all dinos here. Everyone drifts, all the time: it's impossible to drive straight. DUKE OUT!
I'll need something RAD to give me a fix once I'm done with pure...
Anybody know where I can get a Japanese copy of Excite Truck cheaper than £32?

When's 'Wii Carlton' coming out?
Dammit - I just checked but remembered I gave it to someone (who probably doesn't play it), you could have had it. >_<

When's 'Wii Carlton' coming out?
Just install homebrew channel and the gecko region changer and you'll be able to play a UK bargain bin version. That's assuming you have Twighlight Princess.
I love the way you started that sentence with 'just'

When's 'Wii Carlton' coming out?
LOLZ,
it's not as hard as it seems. There's a pre packaged version of the homebrew channel that has the region changer app already bundled with it. There's also a prepackaged version of the twighlight hack save game files needed for all the different versions of the game and different region Wiis. First step is to dl those and unzip them to an SD card.
The Twighlight Princess Hack is as simple as swapping out your Zelda save with the right hacked one, running the game, selecting the hacked save file and then walking backwards in the game world. Bingo. All you do then is point at the prepackaged Homebrew channel app on your SD card and hey presto it installs the channel and the bundled apps for you.
From there on in it's point and click simplicity to run the Gecko region free app.
Yoshi cries everytime you do it though.
Thanks Madbury, but you may as well as asked me to launch myself into space >_<
Just completed Pure, now its just the tricky achievements left to get. Its been a joy so far, I see frustration ahead tho...

I'm dl the demo
1.3 bloody GB ffs. When did it become necessary for everything to be so freakin big?
I believe most of that is taken up with AWESUM!______________________________________________________________________________
When's 'Wii Carlton' coming out?
Yes. I'm quite frankly shocked and disgusted that Madbury doesn't consider the poor Yoshi.
________________________________
BTW Mads can I have a link to these files needed for the hack?
(they're not for me - I couldn't live with myself for making Yoshi cry).
Yoshi would have a heart-attack if he ever found out how much Nintendo console hackery I've been involved in.

Sure, I'll dig them out at home this evening and pm you, or post up the links with some instructions.
Back to Pure - the ltd edition is £25 in HMV this week. Limited edition is silverised case inlay, and art booklet.
I tried the demo, but my main feeling was 'I may as well be playing Excite Truck'. It really is Excite Truck, except that it looks like Motorstorm, and has the SSX trick system. Which makes it the poorer game, judging by the demo.
