PS3 Launch Info!

Submitted by Madbury on Thu, 09/11/2006 - 13:22.

Zipola, Nada, Niet, Nothing.

Is it my imagination or is there absolutely no pre-launch PS3 goss? The last 'news' update on the us PS3 site was 18th of October and that was just to announce that there would be some games at launch and "..NBA 07,[will be] running at full 1080p for the highest resolution image possible." oh and the fact that PS3 will have online stuff. Hold the front page!

Seriously this is worse than shit the fucking thing is out in just over a week and nobody knows anything about it other than Motorstorm looks pretty.

No doubt it will be hailed as The Second Coming - the bulk of the audience seems to judge a console on what non-gaming things they have bolted on.

I nearly laughed out loud at work reading some of the garbage the fanboys come out with on YouTube. Mostly about "Lolol yeeah t3h pS3 can play DVDs as standard you have to spend moer to get the 360 to play DVDs hahalol - nice try MS!!1" etc/idiocy.
These people actually quote the "fact" sheets issued by Sony, not only do they actually take the Sony Bullshit seriously, to them it's Gospel!

Have you watched any of the adverts yet? It's as if they're so confident that the brand alone is enough to guarantee success that they dont actually show anything to do with gaming whatsoever.

Oh yeah - the Sixaxis is the original motion controller remember? T3h Nitendo oen are t3h cheap C0py!! LOLOLO aha

People are mugs -

It's like the "reviews" the machine got in the papers here (even though it's not out for ages, and "ages" is just pencilled in) -
A friend of mine went to the exact same press event these other journalists did and came away saying the machine has the worst pad in recent years.

Quote:
The controller is horrible. So uncomfortable if you're going to squeeze the triggers for longer than 10 minutes. A convex surface with resistance? Of course it's going to try to slip out your grip. It means you have to put pressure on your whole hand, even though it's just a tiny bit. This is the incredibly stupid when you consider how important Gran Turismo is to them. Also, forget driving with no rumble.

Then you read what they say in the papers and they're all creaming themselves over it!

I'm not sure really. I'm just so impressed with the Nintendo drip feed of information that I was expecting something similar from Sony. Details of how the online functionality will work, what content will be downloadable from day one. Their Live arcade equivalent etc.

I'm no Sony hat0r infact my PS2 has taken up a big chunk of my gaming time over the last couple of years. I'm just not feeling any kind of push from Sony for their product. I mean do we really know ANYTHING about the launch titles other than the names of them and a few target renders? What would you buy as launch titles? I really don't have the first clue, Motorstorm, maybe, as that's the one that everyone seems to harp on about. Puzzled

Don't even get me started on the Ads. Come back 'Third Place' everything is forgiven Laughing out loud

Riiiiiiight

So the two new games that have been pimped to high heaven (Motorstorm and Lair) aren't release titles. Out of that list I'd be tempted to go with Ridge 7, Full Auto, Gundam and Sonic, but those choices are based on nothing more than knowledge of predecessors and my gut + it's rude to buy a console without a proper in-house Sega title Sticking out tongue

I know it's not released here until next year, so perhaps we're missing out on the charm offensive, but I somehow expected more 'buzz' from the Sony astroturfer. I mean at that price point as Joe average consumer I want to know exactly what I'm getting for my cash other than a Sony logo on a big heavy lump of shiny plastic. I mean where's the PS3 peripherals, headset, AV cables, memory cards, DVD remote etc. Have I simply missed the pictures of these?

I'll go bury my head back in the sand now......

Sonic is dead as a launch title too aparently.

tsk.

Can't get the Sega these days.

I think "the Internet" is just being a bit focused on an other console launching at a similar time.

PlayStation 3 will sell on its exclusivity early doors.

Prestige too.

That's how the PSP went down at launch? It seems to work.

No Sonic! Worst launch evar Sticking out tongue

Seriously though what is wrong with these early adopters. Who in their right mind wants to shit a weeks wages away to play the latest updates to EA's sports games?

Actually I was mildly intrigued by Rainbow Six Vegas as it looks like a more interesting environment than the generic European city stuff these games normally fall back on.

Still Ridge 7 is worth a punt isn't it. Namco must be laughing their heads off right about now.

I dont want any of this from a console!

I dont want Blu Ray, I dont want a media hub....

All I want is a motherboard, controller ports and a proprietry drive housed in a neat little case I can carry around to people's yard if need be so I can give em a kicking on VF...

I thought that's what a console was.....the 360 and PS3 are more like pretend PCs, I dont want a PC! - I just want VF and Dante T_T

I can't decide whether to view this post in Hi-Def or Blu-ray. I shall consult IGN for the answers.

And just for a laugh, here's a quote from Neil Thompson, UK XBox boss, on the PS3 launching next year -

Microsoft suit wrote:
In some ways it would have been good if it had (launched before Xmas), because then people could have really made the comparison. Sometimes it's worse when you're fighting a myth, than when you're fighting reality.

& on XBox Vs Wii -

It has the potential of taking consumers spend and wallet share away from us in general, but at a product comparison level it's not competing with us at all. It's an innovative, low-definition product," said Thompson.

One last thing - the controller....

I always assumed the reason they had to take the rumble motors out was because they needed that space for whatever they're using for the tilt feature. The board and battery take up less room than what the current Dual Shock 2 internal does -

This is class too -

They've nailed it - a machine that's even more of a pig to work with than the PS2 and Panasonic Q! Well done XD

I can't imagine this will hurt the launch, but what an odd time to quit. You think he'd have waited until after the launch?

Is it just me or are UK consumers wising up to the fact that PS3 is region free for games and the UK price for the console is significantly over the odds. One of my friends is tempted to buy one, but he's probably going to get it shipped in from the States if he does.

(I MUST RESIST)

JibberX

JibberX's picture

Posted: Wed, 14/02/2007 - 10:23

It's got bad -

I got mine for £260 for the 60GB machine, £65 for the postage (no customs tax BOOYAKKA!), and a further £32 inc postage for VF5.

All set to go - just waiting on VF5 to arrive! XD

One thing that does strike me about the machine is the cheapness of the Six Axis in both look and feel, it feels like those Hong Kong Dual Shock 2 copies. Also the drive, while nice and quiet in operation is pure clunk when you slide a disk in.

I had God Hand running on the PS2 through RGB and the PS3 HDMI/480p last night and flicking between the two. They've sorted the PS2 display issues, no more of the mess we saw before and forcing it to 480p smooths things out nicely but the colours are really dull.

Media playback is fucking wicked though, the menu is very elegant and the music player is really nice. No idea what this machine is doing with DVDs but the extent to which it makes my DVD player look stupid is a bit much, I'm not getting any of the upscaling nastiness I get via my DVD player. Still waiting to see if I can get some Blu Rays through work, I badly need to see some of that.

I'm cradling my head in my hands here (whilst typing telepathically).

So your saying... for £360 give or take £50 I could be playing VF5 with really really really rubbish controllers...

I can resist... that price is silly-ish.

I have no HDness atm wasn't planning HDing for 5 years...

Can you hook a PS-3 up via VGA?

JibberX

JibberX's picture

The controllers aren't that bad I don't think, they are a lot lighter though and the shoulder "triggers" are a little odd initially. The lack of rumble blows chunks when you play PS2 games though.

I'm all HD Ready now, Armored Core 4 was the breaking point...

It's the poor quality of the moulding that I really notice - it blatantly looks like one of those fake Dual Shocks, for the price you're paying for a Six Axis it does take the piss. No rumble is ridiculous, there's no excuse for it - the board inside (I've taken it apart) is TINY and the tilt sensor is surface mounted, why they cant leave at least one of the motors inside the now completely empty casing is beyond me.

Those triggers are horrible aswell - tried playing DMC3 on them and they are useless when used as digital buttons, you have to give them around a 1/4 push inwards for them to register; useless for rapid weapon switching Dantenomics.

I've played about 50 plus hours on AC4 now and that's pretty ninja fast for the most part (boost and quick boost are mapped to L2 and R2 respectively). Haven't had any problems with the pad though (PS2 games do feel awkward sometimes, especially ACE2). My only complaint with the triggers is that they aren't curved outward. Admittedly, you can work around this but it's a bit annoying.

Cacophanus

Cacophanus's picture

Posted: Wed, 14/02/2007 - 12:27

Trust me when you're trying to switch weapons within a certain frame during an air-juggle with Dante you'll have problems. What I'm talking about is different to boosting in AC4, it's the travel of the button which causes the input delay and it's too much of a re-adjustment. I cannot stand analogue triggers, they are of no use to me whatsoever for the games I play.

They're good for driving games though eh Smiling

Personally I'm a big fan of analogue triggers. I've always thought the DS2 was teh poor mans controller when it comes to driving games. Just play F355 (driver aids off) on the PS2 and then on the DC if you're not convinced.

On the flip side I can see where Saur is coming from. I guess the 360 pad is probably the best compromise as it has both.

Madbury

Madbury's picture

Posted: Wed, 14/02/2007 - 13:55

All depends if you sold your soul to the DS2 doesn't it. Games suffer from not having decent d-pad, sticks and shoulders... I fondled a sixaxis and played on a ps3 demo pod for a little bit, because I have hands of a demi-god I can do whatever I like with it, I can't see the triggers working at all on driving games for a long period of time, you'd have to wedge your fingers in the gap and the lip at the top and use them that way maybe.

They should've done a lot of things, but the most obvious on concave triggers or those kinda cube style recessing jobbies into the pad... there is enough room after all.

The 360 pad is definitly the pinnacle of that twin analogues, d-pad, dual shoulders, 4 face buttons, 2 selection button and 1 wierd button design... no tilt though... and thats the future!!

Kage has fantasies about being as tough as Akira.....but no, it can never be. XD

OMG - VF5 is THE SHIT!!!! I'm proper blowing up over this - the sickest thing yet is that heads that I know and come round for challenges are in the game! It's mint having London chat like "I'll bang u up blud!" in the player comments! I just fought my friend Pat's Sarah "Stalwart" -

So far I know 3 people in the game's quest mode! Laughing out loud

LONDON CREEEW!!!1 \o/

PS - the game's region is in accordance to your system menu language, if you set the menu to English the whole game is in English. Blatantly have to set it back to Japanese for the fight commentary though!

This is a masterclass in how to make a beat em up - I love the way your character evolves through the series, retaining everything you know and love while having tons of new stuff which will blow your mind!

Why cant Calibur be like this?!?!?! X_X - why rip everything out of the character and start again each time???

Every time I've seen something new with Akira it's like Jawdropping! and because it's the character you know and love with no fuckries - you just keep piling the new shit onto the pile of hurt you already have!

USA system setting;

Japan system setting;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcVPcO7a_XM

When it's challenge session time the system language has to get changed to Japanese - you CANT play for honour without these guys, it's like being at a tournament! There's no English included for half the moves and situations in English setting compared with the Japanese, plus I love how the Japanese guys go completely nuts! XD

I'll give Kage one ting (apart from the fact he's a ninja)- he's got the best choon in the game by far! amd I mean CH00N!!!1
