I think they're using a new firmware which generates real Yoshis out of cotton wool and kitten magic.

ahhhh fur effect... I remember the debates about "accurate fur rendering" back in the day.

It makes games better you know.

Here's yer 3d camera doofer.

I was unaware this game existed:

That's really clever Shock

I still stand by my Yoshi/Kitty-Cuddles concept though.

(didn't know where to put this)

Lot of stuff here about some new Wii Ware bits and pieces;

That is what I was thinking of, but it is a little bit 2+2=5 at the moment - people are guessing it might be something like this.

The more I think about it, the more this doesn't seem quite right. But with that, maybe a compass and a gyro as well, you could make something really interesting. It does seem likely there will be some sort of motion sensing, Iwata has suggested as much.

Yeah, there feels like there are 2 different types of 3d.

Passive and Active 3d.

One where you sit there and go ooooooooooooo. And one where you fiddle about to get that effect above.

But yeah the combo of camera, gyro and motion with the accuracy of motion plus would make Nintendo SenseTM.

What you could do with gameplay is mind bending... it would certainly add an extra dimension... guffah guffah, chortle chortle.

What I love about Nintendo is its ability to come up with simple ideas that really impact the way games are played. And they're always the sort of ideas that make you wonder why nobody else thought of it before.

This certainly looks like a worthy successor to the money printer that is the DS.

It's either that or they've gone with a screen with a lenticular lens, which, given the need for it to be handheld and viewed from a certain distance and angle is very doable. That would give you 3D without the need for glasses or any giro/camera trickery.

If they can offer a 3D experience in the hand and shift volume (which let's face it their bound to) then it's game set and match for 3D, better start saving up for yet another tele Sad

Is lenticular the only tech? Whilst it does the trick... its a bit shoddy, even on those posters. You'd lose quite a bit of viewable area, unless you can control when lenticular is on or not.

That idea literally changes the angle the light it coming at you right? I can't see Nintendo coming up with a device where your head has to be in a certain place to enjoy it... cough Virtual Boy... cough GameBoy Advance...

Also, it wouldn't be so compatible with the camera eye tracking idea. Unless I've got the lenticular idea wrong in me head.

Some more partly informed bits of speculation:

There is something very strange about the announcement of this 3DS, the XL has not even hit in the States yet. It is unlike Nintendo to pre-announce hardware, I wonder if they know something we don't.

Considering Nintendo's history is just re-appropriating existing tech and making it interesting for gameplay... the 3ds might just bit a shot in the dark like the ds was eh.

So I guess they could goof a fixed distance 3d thing, people might be prepared to stick their head in a clamp to make it work... as for the analogue nub idea... that is horrendous... deeply deeply offensive idea.

What I find exciting is that they've proved with the DSi XL that you don't need high res to have a better experience... and with this 3d thang whatever it might be, the res will be the same, you'd assume, to make the backwards compatibility work in a nice way.

So all you have, and this is me on a geek-off, is with the lenticular idea, each alternate strip of pixels renders the entire scene from a different angle at teh same res and the 3d effect will be such that the res is irrelevant.

I think I read up on the lenticular idea, the lens in on the individual pixel in vertical strips... how this might worth with the device in the alternate position with backwards compatible games, who knows... maybe they'll have it working on both axes.

The speculation is fun, but you can smell the potential interesting ideas you could get.

How about this:

- screens are 3D lenticular to create a narrow field of vision
- 3DS uses a camera to work out where your head is
- 3DS uses motion senses to work out how it is being held and moved

So... the 3DS changes the image depending on your viewing position to maintain 3D.

As I understand it... and that can be pretty bad I know... the lenticular thing has a specific focal length for it to work... or for it to work with any kind of purpose.

So your head is going to have to be within a area of predicted 3 dimensional space for anything quality to happen... and thinking about it, the pocket where a head has to be for the dual screens to work is kinda predictable to a certain threshold... so it should all work.

Based on all the speculation we have over the last 24hours. But if you have 2 screens, and you want to look at them, and with the locking hinge idea of the DS, I suppose there is something to work with.

It does kinda tread over the, woooo amazing viewing angles of the DSi and XL and the community aspect of that idea.

Yeah, that doesn't quite add up either.

Perhaps it is much simpler than people are speculating, or they've hit upon some combination of hardware no one has thought of yet.

http://hometheater3d.com/news/?p=1062

it could be like this yeah. If the press junk is to be believed then these sets do offer a reasonable 3D viewing angle. To do 2D you're just pushing the same information down each pipe. I can't find the page on the Philips website about this set, but when I read up on this a couple of months back it implied that the 3D effect was encoded using a depth map, which would in theory fit well with games development as you're already building in 3D. So in essence you're just giving each pixel an additional 'z' value as opposed to having to render the view from 2 different camera positions.

Massive speculation on my part clearly. The alternative is some new hardware that has all the tracking stuff talked about earlier built in to the hardware to make it fast and workable compared to a software solution (which would I think be doable on the existing DSi hardware). Most of the latest crop of digital cameras are doing face recognition these days, so I supsect there's some off the shelf stuff that will be able to work out where you are in relation to the camera and could adjust the image on the screens accordingly.

That's only going to work if you move your head around in relation to the screen, but arguably this has more gameplay potential than the lenticular idea as in theory you could peek around objects.

Rotation is another thing you'd need to consider for 3D, given that it is DS/DSi compatible.

Here is what looks very likely to be the 3D screen tech:

http://sharp-world.com/corporate/g_topix/3d/index.html

http://www.sharp.co.jp/corporate/news/100402-a.html

also, that press release was strange, apparently the story had leaked and Nintendo needed to pre-empt it:

My brain can't cope with why this is what this is?

Doesn't feel as inevitable as colour? or Stereo sound?

Quite interesting as a thing though eh. 3d mobile phones are more interesting to me here... but again I get lost with spacial navigation in a virtual 3d doodad...

Good excuse to sell Virtual Boy games with the 3DSware eh.

So the question is... what games will the 3DS have?

I reckon generally, quite a few remakes and sequels, and undoubtably some interesting new Nintendo stuff.

Some possible remakes/sequels:

Warioware 3D could be interesting
New Super Mario Bros 3D, or Paper Mario 3D
Nintencats
Starfox 3D seems like a good idea
Pikmin 3 (maybe thats why we haven't seen it?)
Rez, which could work well rejigged with a stylus
F Zero 3D

Fast stuff, mainly. You could probably do a mean Picross 3D and Cubello too. This is the kind of stuff I'd like to see anyway Smile

I'm not sure how you can interact with a 3d object on a 2d plane. It will break the illusion immediately unless only the top screen is 3d. Which would make sense I suppose.

Both being 3d would work, but not usable with a stylus.

Maybe it would work if the screen was reasonably small? Not sure either way.
