Apologies if the title is spelt wrongly.
As per title really, I'm really interested in this game. It looks like they have kept the same graphics and engine, but created a much wider set of challenges for our ball rolling hero.
The original is one of my favourite games of the last few years and this sequel could cause me to foam at the mouth in anticipation.
Just need to pluck up enough courage to eat further into the overdraft

Do you mean a PS2 sequel, or the rumoured (announced?) DS game?
I hadn't heard much about the sequel, I thought it would be just more of the same.
I have to say, much as I enjoyed the original, I can't see much that could be done to improve it unless they are making some radical changes.
Nah I'm talking about the PS2 sequel, it's available on Play-asia now (possibly for pre-order not sure).
It looks like more of the same, which can only be a good thing. Sounds like they've introduced a branching level structure and themed collection (e.g. collect animals). The core gameplay sounds unchanged though.
...
Y'know, I played the demo of the original... and... I don't think I got on with it. Felt like something I'd played already.
Not really a collectemup kinda guy. I couldn't quite see where the game was going to go, I think maybe the pikmin'esque time limit and the finit exploration within that time limit freaked me out abit.
I can only assume I missed something really badly?
It's not really about collecting, it's about increasing in size, mass and power through destruction. Wrapped in a sweet package, but actually pretty cruel ^^
Have a read of my NTSC-uk review of it, to get more opinion, if you like.

Trebs review is very good and whilst I agree that the core gameplay mechanic is the city trashing sticky ball rolling fun, once you've clocked the game (takes a couple of hours) the draw to keep playing is the collecting element. Oh and the fact that it's superb fun.
Seriously Jib you need to sit down with this game and zone out with it for a bit. You'll see eventually that the environments aren't as restrictive as you originally believed.
...
And if that's not enough then there's always the "quirky" story, great presentation and catchy soundtrack too!
Did anyone else find the alarm that sounds when you've got 30 seconds left really annoying? It's like the sound of your alarm in the morning when you can't be arsed to turn it off.
I'm not really into collecting/being completist. No matter what they try and present me as gifts for collection, they haven't suckered me in yet
Just getting bigger and bigger - big enough to roll Godzilla up into a ball - was enough for me ^^
And yep, I have the new one on pre-order

Cool, I think I'll get my mate to pick me one up in Tokyo whilst he's over there. There is no way they can screw this game up if they keep the same engine.
I'm sold so long as the music is as infectious as the original's.
Katamari Damacy/Damashii was one of those games that really did feed off my obsessive compulsive tendencies.
Did anyone else get this?
Much like the first, but feels quite a bit easier. This is a slight shame, as I didn't exactly find the first hard. Thankfully, everything else has retained the first game's baffling, Python-esque charm. If anything, it really pushes its "Cute Mass Murder" schtick to the limit - one task sees you having to kill a class of 80 pupils in a high school. It's dressed up as humour, of course, but really does have a hard, surreal edge hidden beneath the fluff. Totally unapologetic and totally bananas.
I do think they could have stretched the premise a bit further: co-op sounds fun, and will give it a try with mates on the weekend, hopefully (and if I can be assed lugging my PS2 around) but the standard game only features slight variations on the basic premise (which I won't spoil here).
There is an amazing level that is one of the best in gaming history:
Spoiler; highlight below to see....
Like the first, there's a level where you get big enough to roll up mountains and clouds. However, in this one, you literally get to roll up up the entore WORLD whilst doing it. You'll see Hollywood, Paris, the Taj Mahal, Houses of Parliament, The Great Wall of China and loads of others, once you escape Katamari town. The level's about 10 times the size of the equivalent in the first, and packed with insane levels of detail. My favourites: the Whale with Angel wings and the huge Ultraman you only see the legs of until you get immense
A worthy sequel that does everything the first did but bigger and better and prettier, but sadly doesn't add any new innovative touches. Still what I would call an essential purchase though, definitely

Sounds neato, a case of if it aint broke don't fix it perhaps
I didn't get this in the end, on a bit of a game buying down time (saving for the wedding/trying to get rid of debt)
Well... I've spent a couple of afternoons on this, and I'm already bored. I must only be about 1/3 of the way through the game.
The presentation grates this time around, they are trying waaay to hard to be wacky now, it is completely out of balance. Music is very poor compared to the first, and very derivative. The menus are an offense to common sense.
The game itself... is exactly the same! It's the same fucking game! Ok, you have different settings, but a lot of the same items, and exactly the same game mechanic.
At the very least they need to get away from the creating stars idea; rolling for a different purpose should have been an essential part of the sequel.
Co-op mode is absolutely horrendous too. It will make you want to kill your friends for being useless, whether they are or not. Dumb, dumb addition.
I've found myself replaying the original, rather that persevering with the sequel, and enjoying myself a lot more there.
What a waste. I'll reserve judgement till I get to play it myself, but from those impressions it sounds like they've fumbled the ball.
Sounds neato
What a waste
Lol, mate, make your mind up. Perhaps by playing the game yourself?
Anyway, I disagree with you PC. Lacks innovation, but everything else was spot-on. Ok, they should have made more effort, but this really was a game where 'more of the same' is enough, particularly with the first being so short. Besides, you are notoriously harsh on sequels, so your opinion's crap anyway

Yikes opinion dicotomy
who to believe Treb or Paper >_< I can't make up my mind. I guess Play-Asia need to put it on as a weekly special so I can find out who's talking arse
