A few things have set me off on making this thread: been given a spare room that I'm making into a nice den of gaming goodness, never got into fighters as much as I wanted to, seen a cheap stick for sale at Amazon, sticks are sick and I wants some!

Anyways, what sticks do you guys have? Do you switch the parts around, change the buttons etc? Do certain sticks only work with certain fighters? If I have a PAL PS3 should I just forget it as no doubt all the best fighters are Japanese PS2 games? Is there a Wii Stick about?

Your sticks, show me themz...ermz....

Posted: Mon, 22/10/2007 - 16:09

Had at look at Amazon and they have these sticks by Hori (who I take it are the main players for sticks right?)

Arcade Fighting Stick (PS3) £18

Virtua Fighter 5 EX2 Fighting Stick (Xbox 360) £47

Fighting Stick (Wii) £30

Now with the PS3 stick being that low price I'm tempted to get a couple of them, but would appreciate some guidance...I mean whats the point of a stick if there ain't shit to play it with...whats the Best PAL fighter that I could use a PS3 stick with?

That Hori Fighting Stick 3 is the Ghetto Standard(TM) - it's Hori's standard model, for example that Wii and Xbox 360 stick you show is the exact same Hori with different colours.

There are only 2 sticks you need to concern yourself with TBH;

1. The Ghetto Hori (Fighting Stick 3 etc) - this basic model does nothing wrong.

2. Hori Real Arcade Pro - this is the stick for those with space, money and blingdom. It's perfection.

Everything else is bollocks - DO NOT buy a non Japanese stick ever! American stick especially are for n00bs, the ignorant and Neanderthals.

Only PAL PS3 fighting game worth bothering with is VF5, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Safe, so probably best if I get the Ghetto Hori and see how I get on with it then hunt down the Hori Real Arcade Pro for "MY STICK" and let sucker challengers deal with the other one.

With the PS3 being backward-compat are there any good PAL PS2 fighters I should investigate?

Get Third strike and we can be learning n00bs together!!! XD

Mate, there's the VF5 demo up on the 360 market place if you wanna test the water with it first.

I gave it a sampling the other night and I'll be picking up a PS3 copy with a Hori stick shortly.

What I need is one stick to rule them all sort'a thing.

I need a stick that will work on the bulk of my consoles with adapters if necessary. I went totally ape shit when I found out that my DC to XBox adapter didn't work with SF Anniversary Sad What a waste.

It's infuriating

The Virtua Stick High Grade has to be the best home stick I've used. I'm pondering whether hacking it up to work with all sorts is the way to go. Maybe if I see another reasonably cheaply...

Well yeah. That would be ideal. Really you want one stick that will work on

PC
DC
Saturn
PS2
PS3
360

Plus maybe Gamecube/Wii

It's a lot to ask, but I'm surprised there isn't a little doohicky on the market to do the job.

Didn't the X-Arcade stick try to do something like that? The stick itself had usb or something built in, and you could buy add-on modules for DC, Xbox, Cube, etc.

I think they had trouble making the adaptors though, so they were quite expensive, and it never really took off. Didn't help that the stick was no good either. Ah, there you go:

Interesting bit about third party 360 controllers they link to as well:

There's also one recently announced by Elecom aswell - not sure on the components used or the feel but it's meant to be compatible with PS3, Wii and Windows;

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20071022/ggl.htm

I forgot all about the Virtua High Grade - I prefer that to the Real Arcade Pro, the base is so much better and you absolutely cannot fault the stick and buttons.

Problem is the XArcade stick is utter bobbins. I suppose you could gut one (was it offered as a kit at any point?) and then shove the internals into an 7337 stick of your choosing.

Having a handful of adapters is preferrable to 4 or 5 sticks kicking around. I just resent buyiny essentially the same hardware over and over, seems wasteful and pointless.

LOL check out the rogue pube in the Elecom publicity shot (bottom left)

The Virtua Hi-Grade stick is phenominal. Best stick I've ever used, but then I've not tried a Real Arcade Pro yet. Frankly I can't see how you could get much better than the Hi-Grade, the size, weight and switchgear are pretty damned perfect.

I built my own arcade stick when I was a kid. I made adaptors for the NES, Master System, Mega Drive, SNES, Amiga, N64, and possibly even Jaguar. Reverse engineering pads and building my own PCBs, rather than hacking up existing pads. I keep meaning to dig it up and take some photos - I placed the buttons reeeally far apart, but couldn't afford another case to fix it. Even though, it was better than all the official sticks I could find, until I got hold of a Hori Fighting Stick for the SNES at any rate.

I'd started along something similar with my Supergun. Basically to my mind the Neo Geo sticks are the simplest model (electronically) as they're just straight to the metal, no multiplexing at all one pin for every input. They use a 15 pin d sub connector so You've got to have 2 pins for power, 4 for the d-stick, leaving 9 for buttons.

Essentially I would choose that as my generic interface, hack the stick down to that standard and then convert from there. It's all become a lot more difficult as serial based technologies have taken over. I could just about cope intellectually with the Megadrive multiplexing, but the modern stuff is way beyond me.

After the Virtua Fighter 5 demo hit the market place last week, I just had to get me a stick at any cost to get a bit of practice and shake some severe rust in playing VF5. Because quite frankly, even on a pad for VF...I suck ass.

But thats why it's a good reason I start playing this game properly on a stick, and it's what all of you guys buying VF5 for the 360 should be doing. Anyway, here it is...

Has all the same features of a pad, 360 Guide button, bumpers tucked away at the top with the Start and Back buttons. You can also plug in a mic. Oh and yes, the stick is wired for anyone wondering.

"Limited Edition"? Ofcourse...not a hastily placed sticker on left over stock. ;p Check out them rad character stickers! For anyone with the DOA4 stick, this is exactly what it is minus the crap Kokoro art plate. Delievered from Amazon for about £47. Expensive for what it is, but it gets the job done and is a great stick.

In a nutshell, the Fighting Stick EX2 to me feels almost exactly like the Hori Soul Calibur II stick which is regarded by many as one of the best sticks you can get for the PS2 outside of a HRAP, even with it's stock buttons and parts. Like the SCII stick, it's very light and not bulky to hold and use at all.

I've got a HRAP, and for the life of me I cannot use it. The thing is just too overly large and you can only really play it if you have a table infront of you. With one of these, you can kick back and play on your lap. Infact, when I was still using a HRAP, I removed the metal base off the thing, and it became super light!

Even though it's been apparently been released because of VF5 (the sticker says so!) it's not, so you have to make sure you config the buttons correctly before you begin in the options.

That's how I have them set, I just use A (Gaurd), B (Punch) and X (Kick). While i'm at it heres the way you arrange the buttons for Street Fighter AE.

No pic yet*

X: Medium Punch
Y: Hard Punch
White\Right Trigger: Hard Kick
A: Light Kick
B: Light Punch
Black\Left Trigger: Hard Punch

I am really pants at Virtua Fighter, the main reason being is that this game is just not built for a pad in any shape or form. Take it from me, believe me...it's not possible. I can play ANY fighting game on a pad...MvC2, CvS2, SF3, HSF2, SSF2T, Tekken...but Virtua Fighter for me has always been impossible. The sense of timing and rythem to some of the moves is totally lost on a pad as you can't really drum the moves out like you can on a stick. Also the inputs for some of the moves and combos are quite strict and that is just not gonna do your fingers any favours and you WILL end up with a claw hand.

This stick passes all of the above tests for VF for me. Within a few minutes I was able to pull of some moves which were totally impossible on pad without binding buttons togeather (NO...Not a good Idea, creates bad habits [P+K+G to X for example]) so no complaints from me about this.

Just waiting for the game now, got some well earned holidays coming up, gonna waste the day just learning to play it... ;D

I have been struggling to get to grips with Arcade Sticks for over 2 years...and for Street Fighter 3, I still can't link or cancel supers in a match as I BLOODY SUCK! Laughing out loud Same situation with this stick too, but it's all down to a lack of practice on my behalf. So don't get put off if you can't pull moves off first time in VF or SF, it just takes a bit of time. Smile

So if anyone was in two minds about getting this for VF5 and other fighters and you have £50 to throw away, not only is this your only choice, but it's a good one as well. You may be able to pick up the older DOA4 stick cheaper online too so give that a shot too.

Not sure if this has the same weakness of the old xbox Hori, where the buttons would wear out the button connectors, but i'll look into it. My SCII one has been abused alot over the past year and it still works fine, so if it's the same build quality as that it should be fine.

When I get some time Spag...I will post up all my sticks, including the 1337est of them all...A NES ADVANTAGE. *bows*

Singho that really is lovely, but I couldn't begin to justify 50 notes on a stick. I'm going to have to go for the one stick to rule them all approach. Looks like I will need the cheapest and nastiest 360 pad I can lay my hands on a trip to maplins and an evening with the soldering iron.

Bang for bucks I'm going to have to go for a JPN DC stick as my universal choice.

Madbury

Madbury's picture

Posted: Wed, 24/10/2007 - 09:48

That's exactly what I did for the old Xbox, I just bought a piece of shit Xbox pad from Crack Converters and secured the board to the inside and wired the switches directly.

Only problem was that I used a UK DC stick for the mod - playing 3rd Strike online was infuriating enough with the lag but having the stick sticking in position once moved was the last straw.

It didn't survive my wrath.

If anything it's probably worth putting an old Dual Shock board inside the stick instead Mads. There's a Dual Shock converter for just about every machine ennit - if you want One Stick To Rule Them All I reckon that's the way to go.

When I used to play Commando on the C64 I used to get a friend to constantly hammer the enter button on the keyboard so I could in effect, play it with auto-fire.

Human auto-fire FTW! XD

I need slave labour for DMC3 aswell - it's SO fucking hard to Jump Cancel Cerberus' flicker at the speed I want without holding the pad "Air Guitar style". If I had a little servant who'd hammer my triangle button on command my life would be enriched.

The Hori 360 stick is great on PacMan CE... and er VF5... other than that... I guess it would rock on Virtua Tennis 3 aswell... other than that... I was pseudo looking forward to Street Fighter HG, but you know, what with VF.

I'm wondering if the stick is compatible with the Windows drivers from the 360 pad... I am assuming it will be, will let you know.

That would be fucking wicked! O_O I wish I didn't get rid of mine, it's a damn fine stick.

The Neo Geo buttons on the Classic Controller are mapped exactly as they were on the Neo Geo CD pad;

So -
C= y
D= x
A= b
B= a

Yoshi's story was released on VC yesterday - that game is dripping with cute, I love the Yoshi singing at the start! Laughing out loud
They've got the PC Engine CD-ROM games going now aswell, downloaded Chou Aniki so far - that game is insane!

Err WOW CD-ROM2 games, they're going to be rather large aren't they? I bet the FMV and Music has been compressed to keep file sizes down.

For Neo Geo I'd prefer 4 buttons in a row, just like the old style Neo sticks, but that pad would be a close second.

Madbury

Yeah man they've got PC Engine CD games up now - Gradius II is up shortly, that's getting rinsed! I'm seriously running out of space on the Wii though, I need to get rid of a load of VC games I dont play, I'll dump em on a memory card. KOF '94 is out soon too >_< - HOW I'm going to fit all this stuff is a mystery.

You can use the Wii Remote to play Neo games aswell - If I remember right it's 4 buttons in a row config as B A 1 2.

Sorry to keep going on about Wii stuff but;

THey never go the direction I want and I cant even do basic directional moves like quarter circle forward or watever. Its nice though cause I dont have to fork out extra cash for a stick I cant use =P Its all about the D-pad for me XD

Hey saur, wtf man, how are you sposed to own at DMC4 if you cant even JC Cerberus' Swing? But lemme guess why...your still using X for Jump and Tri for attack right?

You NEED sticks for this stuff, you just cannot get the level of speed and precision on a pad no matter how used to it you are. The stick is part of these games, it's a real artform and a skill that you develop alongside what you learn about each game/character;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZO5H5Gw9lo

Laziness and reliance on shite controllers is why we westerners get pwned so hard at every fucking gaming event that means anything! XD

I've got the DMC Flicker cancel properly down now at last, the problem was that I was mentally locked to a certain tempo on the cancels - as soon as I proved to myself I could go faster it all started to happen! Laughing out loud
I could always do it - but the tempo was wrong so I'd lose height on it quickly, instead of just sitting there and making sure I got it right I just lit a J and moved on.

Just got off an afternoon session with my DC sticks (thanks again!) and 3rd Strike. Both the sticks and the game were new to me. Just been trying to get to grips with 'em on training. I'm finding it rather difficult to execute quarter circle commands when I'm situated to the left of the screen. >_<
