GameBoy Micro.... hmmm....

Normally I manage to stem my wierd technology purchases, but there is something funkerama about the GameBoy Micro.

Maybe I just want to see how the stupidly small screen will work.

So Ninty want me to buy the same bit of kit for the 3rd time. They must be having a giraffe.

Give me 3 reasons why I should even consider picking one of these up.

5th time including DS.

One good reason - GameCube Four Swords!

Gamestation do original GBAs for £20 secondhand (!), and I've almost picked up a couple before now as Four Swords controllers.

There's still ambiguity as to the connectivity of the thing.... no one knows quite yet if it has a smaller plug on it, if one at all, which would be un-nintendo like.

Five times though, good spot! Nintendo r teh w!n 4 forcing purchases.

If (well, when) they release a funky LE one, I might, might get one. I hardly play on my SP so it'd be from a 'Gotta collect em all' perspective, not because I really play many GBA titles....

This thing's got interchangeable face plates written all over it... or maybe not, maybe they'll do the LE stuff, thats usually 3 to 6 months in isn't it.

Fairly sure I've read it has the standard GBA link up socket on it, the pics certainly look like it has.

Combined with my Play-Yan it would make a good portable media player. I can't see myself rushing out to buy one though.

  • Launch is slated for this Fall.
  • Silver in color for now, expect all sorts of rainbow-flavored variations.
  • Dimensions: 4 inches wide by 2 inches tall and 0.7 inches thick.
  • Weight: 2.8 ounces (80 paper clips’ worth of weight).
  • Processor: Same as GBA SP.
  • Form factor: “Gleaming shoulder and start/select buttons that literally shine”, removable and customizable face plate.
  • Screen: 2-inches, backlit and the “best Game Boy screen ever” with adjustable brightness controls for use indoors or outdoors.
  • Marketing angle: “We’re making the gorgeous Game Boy Micro for image-conscious folks who love video games, the ones who want the look of their system to be as cool as the games they play on it” according to George Harrison, Nintendo of America Sr. VP of marketing. It’s clear that they’re going after the kids who are too cool to carry around an obvious gaming device but who don’t mind carrying something that looks like the cell phone that they’re already carrying.
  • Accessories: built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery; supports standard headphones.
  • Software: the Game Boy Advance has nearly 700 titles available, all of which will be playable on the Game Boy Micro.

Trying to find decent piccies.

I hope they make a NES pad face plate.
I am looking forward to this, the GBA has a lot of ideal travel games and I don’t think its been overshadowed by the DS or PSP… not yet anyway. I wouldn’t say no to a smaller version with a better screen Smile

I've decided the GameBoy Micro is going to rule the earth... I don't know why, but it has an appeal thats going bring world peace and harmony to our floating ball of water and mud.

You have to love the big N. They don't seem to pay any attention to what any of the other manufacturers are doing. Operating at their own pace, playing their own game by their rules. It's either brilliantly arrogant or stupendously naive.

If you look at the "casual" market gaming folk... they seem perfectly happy to play bad 2d games on their mobiles for exorbitant prices... why not release a mobile sized device that has wooo interchangeable face plates and 500 games of varying quality already in cirulation...?

Combined with a bit of nostalgia Happy! Mario 20th and its great... reports are the screen is fantastic too.

Sounds sexilent.

Hopefully it will work with the Play Yan too. Could be a really sexy and small video player.

Word on the street is that one of our members may have picked on up whilst in Japan recently, who might that be?

Can't believe he's holding out on us. What's up with that. I'm still waiting for him to send me all of his TGS demo discs.

Still look on the up-side, you got your futon.

It's all LIES I tells ya, LIES.... he never sent me that futon, I'm distraught, there he obviously was in Japan, selfeshly perusing Mecha Porn in the top floors of Akihabara, without a care in the world, passing futon shop after futon shop, chuckling in contempt at my request whilst nibbling on deep fried squid on a skewer.

Oh the AGONY, the PAIN, the SUFFERING.

Yoda had something to say about that. Temjin is less eloquent, infact do Virtuaroids (sp?) talk, I forget. The shame. The banishment.

Temjin talks in in Super Robot Taisen Alpha 3, but that's just fucking weird in all honesty.

I do have a GameBoy Micro (the limited edition Famicom version, which is mighty fucking rare here already). Really quite impressed with it actually.

The screen size is pretty tiny, as is the whole unit, but it's not too small. The connection port (used for power as will as linkups) is some denomination of USB (there is also a wireless connector that you can buy, but I abstained). Thankfully the damn thing comes with a headphone socket, unlike the sodding SP.

Been playing Super Robot Taisen J on it and it looks great, not sure on the battery life as yet though.

I think the price of the Micro is putting me off. I may be swayed by the new brighter SP (likely to be the same price as a micro but with its bigger screen it is more usable. I don't really need another one, as I bought a second when the pre-owned ones were cheap at game. It had a slightly scuffed case, but the screen was immaculate. A decal set soon improved the look of the thing.

MEGABUMP!

Picked up a Micro for my bro's birthday pressie this weekend. Comet are doing an absolute steal on these at the moment £25 as long as you can deal with Pink Smile

http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/search.do?n=0&searchTerm=gameboy%20micro

Tempted to get another couple as presents/for me Smile

also Toys R Us are doing a good deal on GBA games at the moment. You can get a triple pack of Metroid Fusion, F-Zero GP Legends and TG Rally for £15.

A really nice present for someone for just shy of 40 notes.

Have comet factored in a stampeding Papercut?

Are there fresh riot like barriers around the shops?

There would only be a stampede if they had silver micros.

... which they probably do in some stores.

... or if they had some Aussie red models in.

There are probably a few in some stores, but I think you'll struggle to find them. They had a silver one in High Wycombe when the salesman in Reading checked for stock in surrounding stores for me.

£25 though I could hardly believe it. Funny thing is I went to Gamestation that day too to see if they had any non-pink ones and they had a Green pre-owned unit for £40 Shock I told the clerk that Comets where selling new units for £25, but he didn't seem phased Sad

The lower pic is a Club Nintendo Famicom faceplate, with microphone detail mimicking the second controller.

It comes with a dummy console and display stand! The dummy micro is the actual console casing complete with buttons, but missing the screen, speaker, and mainboard - crazy.

So you can swap the micros face plate for a different one? Where can I get some?

Madbury

Madbury's picture

The Famicom II faceplate is a Club Nintendo one, and they aren't easy to locate. There are some crufty third party ones that are easy to find (HMV might still have them).

The US and Aussie micros came with extra faceplates, and sometimes you'll find people selling just the faceplates on ebay.

I get the impression the changeable cover idea was Nintendo's plan to ape milking mobile phone accessories with the micro. I don't think the micro ever sold well enough to justify making many available.
