Crazy:

I mean, I like it, but it does seem like a pointless upgrade. Nice colours though!

If they started licensing the DS OS out to other manufacturers, this would be what you'd get right?

I mean a Panasonic DS isn't out of the question now is it...?

Wonder what that's going to do to games like Ouendan... easier, the same... wonder how they've done the pixels... anyone done a LCD with that size pixels for a while? I mean, they are huge right? in the grand scheme of things.

There will be some software reason for this beyond a bigger screen. Is the screen the exact same resolution or is it going to some sort of scaling fudgery to display the content. Maybe this is a concession for video playback/recording...?

So is it back to the size of my original DS?

Thanks to the Internet I now know that LL is a clothing size, that reinforces the scale of the DSi LL, this is also reinforced by the PAL name, DSi XL, again playing on the clothing theme, making the American one called DSi M... wokka wokka boom boom.

I can't get a feel for the scale of this thing... looks like the size of a Psion Netbook... image coming... gotta be larger than a DS Phat though, by a long way... 4.2inch screens!!

Must be some custom Nintendo screen tech dredged up from the GBA days... Iwata keeps telling us he has warehouses full of junk he's bought he wants to reuse.

More importantly, where are my GBA games in DSi Ware and my ability to play them on the Wii? Hardware smardware...

Also on the back of all this hype there are some rumbling of Wii HD early 2010...

I've gone US for this, and selling my UK DSi to pay for it.

Bigger screen is good enough for me - too easily pleased perhaps, but I've been saving Spirit Tracks for it.

94% bigger so the ads tell me. I can't quite work out what that means in real terms. If this means bigger and badder pixels then I might be sold Smile

Madbury

I think it means exactly that, although that size is in comparison to the Lite rather than the DSi.

The blockier the better Smile

Absolutely. I picked up the Megadrive collection on PS3 recently and was horrified by the smoothing option on there. YUCK. Made Shinobi Arcade look like total shit. Also deeply offended that they changed the colouring of the spiderman baddy in Mision 1 stage 2. That shit is just plain wrong. Glad I have the board ready to rumble.

I've yet to see one in the flesh... I suspect when I do I will crumble majestically, as I don't have a DSi and access to DSiWare, which Paper ensures isn't all bobbins.

Naturally I am Captain PAL... so I will be losing money on each and every purchase... hey ho.

The fact you can buy/get hold of Opera via DSiWare should be more than enough really.

What am I waiting for?

Couldn't resist once I saw the pixecellent screen. Gonna load up on DSiWare now, the browser is smokin' fast Smile

It's amazing how you forget the quality of the DS titles... every so often I pick up the Lite and almost decide it should be my console of choice.

Anyways, I laid down the readies for this XL and the screen is excellent, and the DSi stuff is excellent too.

The top of it being like a pool of water is a load of hippy crap, but you can see the resemblance.

Larger screen is definitely reducing the stuck in a letterbox blinkered type effect, feel more free when playing. Also the device feels about the same size as an original PSP closed up, but lighter and less delicate.

Kinda crazy using a non capacitance touch screen, with a pen no less.. THE PRECISION!

That's my favourite bit!

Did you go for Dignified Brown?

Wine Red.

Same colour as parts of my laptop, my glasses, my laptop bag... generally its my kinda colour.

The speed of Opera is brilliant, it might genuinely be useful now. The way the Settings deal with WPA2 WiFi settings is a bit odd... classic Nintendo bolt on to a bolt on to a bolt on stuff.

And I got 1000 DSi Points for being gullible to buy the damn thing. Got it from Toy'R'Us... they claim to sell 80% of Nintendo stuff, so get a decent discount, and I've noticed in my forays there some pretty healthy prices on the end of line stuff.

Stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap.

Yeah man Toys R Us do frequently have some excellent bargain bin deals and are generally pretty cheap for games and kit. I sometimes pop into the Reading branch to take a peek at what they have.

With a built in browser does this out iPad the iPad?

Madbury

no multitouch... thats what the kids are after these days. The ultimate checklist item.

meh, no multitouch... NEXT!

BTW Time to get excited about HTC Desire and Legend (to lesser extent HTC Nexus One) coming to Vodafone in April... (they have multitouch).

But its easy to forget all this DSi functionality exists in the DSi already, the XL is just another attempt to sell the concept I guess.

Wareware Snapped and the story overlay on the photos for one of the characters is hillarious.

The iPad browser will be much better than the DSi one, it is fast enough to be useable but still pretty clunky, with some grotty memory limits, and quite ugly resizing to try and suit dual screens. The low resolution kind of kills it too.

It isn't an iPad killer by any means, but then there isn't that much to compare eh.

Looked at any more artstyle games? Pictopict is addictive as hell.

I started up my old Pokemon Pe(a)rl and dicked over a Gym leader. Which was nice.

Not looked at any more ArtStyle, Boxlife is insane but not really "complete" feels like an old PD game I might've picked up on RISC OS, y';know... interested but insane.

I'll try pictopict...

Has that 3d sudoku game appeared in europe yet? What was it called? Or is that it?

3D Picross?

It hasn't done, but it has just been released in the States I think... UK has a release date beginning of May.

I don't know if it is a region locked DSi hybrid, if not I wouldn't wait for a UK version. That and DIY Wario, eh.

Or just get the Japanese version in fact, language is no great barrier for Picross.

Man I love Picross.

Incidentally totally OT, but has anyone seen the Megaman10 boxart in the US PSN What's New section? Unbelievably bad and not at all like the boxart in the store.

@Jibber I'm pumped for the Legend and the Desire. I've persuaded the wife to get a Legend, which will turn me green with envy I suspect. I bit the bullet and rooted the G1, which in hindsight I should have done months ago. It's soooo much more responsive with a custom rom, way more customisable and gives you all the good stuff too. I've not done the apps to SD card thing yet, but it's only a matter of time as I'm sick to the back teeth of having to trim my apps list for space considerations.

THE single best thing about Cyanogen Mod, which is what I'm running, is the option to leave the home app in memory (if possible) which makes it a snap to drop back to home and slide across the 5 home screens. On the stock rom it was taking somewhere around 5 to 10 seconds to drop back to home, which was very frustrating. Oh and the modified browser is much improved over the stock one, with multitouch zooming Tongue. Having said that the xScope browser isn't bad for $0.99 and that has a very good double tap swing zoom control that actually feels a little better than the pinch zoom paradigm.

There's loads of other nice little touches too like full 360 degree screen reorientation, and some decent bundled apps including an updater to take the pain out of installing updated builds when they are released.

I would imagine that is a deliberate reference to the original (terrible) Mega Man 1 box art.

It isn't all that obscure - it has become something of a cliché for bad box art Smile

LOLOL!!! I saw this last night and nearly choked on my joint! XD
You could possibly argue that it's some sort of clever parody, it must be some sort of joke - or am I giving them too much credit?

The US DSi XL has had a last minute colour change, which is quite strange.

Originally the same Wine Red and Dark Brown colours as everywhere else were shown in promo shots, named Burgundy and Bronze.

Now Burgundy is slightly more pink, with lighter highlight, and Bronze is black with a silver highlight. Just me? Oh well.

Oh yeah, that Platinum DS RPG Infinite Space got a UK release too, but I don't know too much about it - I think it was developed by someone else possibly?

... and yet the actual XL looks the same as the UK ones. Must be a bunch of bodged product shots doing the rounds.
