Got bomberman DS, and it is totally intact... which is usually the biggest concern with these things. The new graphics and animations are perfectly fine, and eight players over two screens works without too much confusion. Some new school powerups that I personally haven't seen ever, blue flames? anyone?
Unfortunately the multiplayer menus are in katakana so it'll take some trial and error/translation to get that sorted. What's handy about the old touch screen is getting to a "battle" is mega fast and mega easy, just prod a few options and yer off.
The on the side bomberman flicking thing is perfectly fine, and actually makes the DS version slightly stand outy and its quite gratifying to flick a deftly judged bomb right onto an existing flame and swap out...

I haven't bothered reading about this, not being a DS owner. What's the stylus actually used for???

Nothing, unless you're dead in multiplayer mode and you have what I would call "Revenge" on, where traditionally you would hover around the play area and release bombs on the surviving players with two levels of power, short and long.
The DS default iteration is that you are stationed a the bottom of the two screens, use the dpad to traverse the screen, then you simply stroke the screen from bottom to top, and the speed of that determines the final resting place of your bomb. Nothing too radical.
Aparently there are some optional voice activated powerups too, so you can shout BOM! etc etc, haven't tried that yet though.
Eight player DS download though, that is a killer freaking app if you ask me.
Is it single pak multi? Awesome if that is the case.
Oh and is it better than the PCEngine versions of the game. Sometimes less is more if you see what I mean.
I know what you mean, it does lack that purity of the earlier bombermans' and the graphical style takes a little time to readjust, but it doesn't totally alienate you.
I'll have to fully investigate the options when I get a chance, I'm trying to get housemates to invest in a DS with the argument that they don't have to buy and games!
Gonna be trying that home DS download station marlarky soon too that should be interesting.
Intersted to know if you get the home downloads working, a quick start guide would be much appreciated, I've got a Netgear wireless router and I'm not altogether certain it will work with that.
Probably not
Anyway back to bomberman. I really love the Saturn version, but there is something extra special about the bare-bones purity of the PCE version that makes it the best imo. It's a shame these modern BM games don't have an unlockable version of Dynablaster hidden away inside.
It's good to see that lessons have been learnt from the piss poor PS1 and N64 incarnations and the developers are sticking to the roots of the game. The voice commands being my only reservation on this. That seems like a gimmick that is there because the DS can do voice as opposed to a good gameplay innovation.
As much as I love this in multiplayer this game is still crying out for a decent single player mode. There just wouldn't be enough opportunities for me to find a person with a DS to play this with. And there's also the issue that I don't own one myself.
Have any of the previous Bomberman iterations had a decent single player element that I should check out?
The only one I've enjoyed at all, apart from the original which was ok-ish, is Saturn Bomberman.
Its mainly down to the graphical design though, there is something about the look of Saturn Bomberman that really appeals. The level layout is more creative than most Bomberman games too.
I think some kind of wario ware style single player game would work well.
There was a wicked game in Bishi bashi special (note to self add to best party game!) where you had three people who had to pass a bomb round. The bomb had a certain number of hits and each person could hit the bomb 1, 2 or 3 times before passing it on to the next person. On the final hit the bomb would explode. Crazy.
Thought about nabbing this, but after the recent deluge of games I had to abstain. Wireless multiplayer should be da bomb though
