While Nintendo seems content to keep WiiWare mostly set aside for indie game makers, they're also finally making some of their own damned downloadable games. Interestingly, they're ports of a Japan-only Game Boy Advance series.
Bit Generations was a series of seven inexpensive Game Boy Advance games released in Japan in 2006, seven different novel games with simple controls and stylish presentation. While Nintendo toyed with releasing them outside Japan, the death of the GBA in these parts ensured that wouldn't happen.
But it seems as if they're remaking all of these games for WiiWare, with slightly different branding. In the U.S., the series is called Art Style, and the first game in the series is called Orbient, based on Orbital from the original portable series.
Coincidentally, this is the one I sunk the most time into: You're a tiny celestial body, and you have to orbit around larger ones, using their gravity to move around and collide with other planets and stars and rocks.
Nintendo says that two more Art Style games will be released here this month. Six of the games, including Orbital, were developed by Chibi-Robo maker Skip; the final game Digidrive was by Pixeljunk Eden creator Q-Games.
Also on tap for WiiWare today is Hudson's Bomberman Blast, with eight-player online. For Virtual Console, there's the cult classic Super Turrican 2. At first glance this would appear to be an uncommonly solid week overall, but remember of course that every week that does not contain Secret of Mana is failure.
Next up Hoverboards!!! (yes I did edit this later to add that joke because I couldn't think of one at the time)

Very good! Can't wait for Dotstream.
Coloris too! Online multiplayer ftw.
Dotstream!1!!1
I LOVE that game!

hot rockin'
now all we need is some crap gestures to crush my childhood dreams.
Already have these on the GBA (can't beat those those lovely little boxes...), but it's good to see these coming to WiiWare for those that don't have the originals.
Dialhex was my favourite. I love how the music changed depending on how well you were playing.
Yeah, they were all great
Had a quick go on Orbient - it is a spot on remake of Orbital, same levels, same music, same scoring, but with nice 3D visuals. For 600 points its great stuff.
gnarley Europlebs(tm) are getting artstyle soon.

Look to the bottom of that webpage and you'll find a link to a pretty cool Q&A with Skip. It's pretty informative, including the revelation that Cubello started life as a fully fledged FPS before being pared down into a puzzler.
cynic mode...
you wonder how many focus groups it took to get to that decision?

Schweeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...
Very good! Can't wait for Dotstream.

Just watched the trailer on the Nintendo Channel, looks like a nice Tron'd up 3D remake, but with exactly the same gameplay
Awesome.
Some nice actual games on the horizon.

Oh man that looks freakin amazing! twitchalicious
Light Trax released yesterday for US WiiWare!
SO: you have the modgied up GBA levels, and the race/championship setup is basically the same. The normal race tracks now have 3D turns that are sort of apart from the track layout, to freak with your mind.
There is an entirely new bit, called freeway, which has lots of 3D curves and hills but is essentially an endless straight line, with you overtaking other lines indefinitely to build up speed by unlocking higher gears.
Once you finish one championship you have to go to the freeway and take a junction to the next area in order to unlock it. The reward for completing the game is a completely endless version of freeway.
Its pretty good man, 600 points. The music is excellent. The only thing that is really bad about it, is the name. dotstream is so much better.
Someone at Nintendo needs to get their arse in gear:
