Best Ever Party Game

Summer is upon us once more and BBQ season is just starting, which means a far higher number of social gatherings and a greater potential for some serious party gaming.

What are the ultimate party games? I've decided on some criteria below:

1. The game must support a minimum of four simultaneous players
2. Play mechanics should be accessible to all
3. Play time should be short (e.g. so multiple players can share one character)
4. No freakin board games that includes the Mario Party snore-fests

I'm going to start with

Virtua Tennis (more accessible than the sequel in my book).

Well, there are some obvious ones:

Atsumare Made in Wario (anyone can play it)
Ramparts (ok, ok, it's 3 player)
Bomberman (or maybe Saturn Bomberman)
Monkey Target 2 (ultimate risk/reward multi
Monkey Golf 2 (long games mind)
Beach Spikers (summery _and_ jiggly)
Kick Off 2 (4 player Amiga version)
Micro Machines (4 player Mega Drive version)

Me and Denti meet up with another two of our mates every Sunday. Along with system link Halo 2 and some fighting games, we go for:

Mashed (Xbox) – like Micro Machines but better
Bomberman Generation (GC)
Pacman Vs. (GC) only occasionally cos of the SP side of things, but it’s great

For some reason, we haven’t played Beach Spikers in a while, despite us all liking it :?
We also tried Final Fantasy GC, but it sucks. Hard. Can you think of any others we play, Denti?

Super Monkey Ball

It has everything you could ever need.

Not played Mashed, sounds interesting.

Super Monkey Ball is utterly fantastic and a super party game. I'm not including Halo as it's too difficult for new players

How about

Blast Chamber
Super Mario Kart
Worms???

Yeah, I was only mentioned Halo cos once you get people interested in it, it's hard to get them playing anything else ^_~
Mashed is ace, yeah. Avoid the PS2 version (long loading times, inferior effects, weaker camera, fewer courses, need a 4-player adapter) but the XB one is really good and very cheap. It's subtitled 'Fully Loaded', I think.

Mario Kart GC is awful; no-one will touch it. Never played Blast Chamber - what's it about? Not a fan of Worms, although it's reminded me of the BEST GAME EVAH!!111eleven!1

DEATH TANK!!!

Oh aye, we play SMB from time to time, although I find the second game's mini games much weaker than the first...apart from Target, which is amazing Smile

We have a long history of playing multi. When all of us had DC Quake 3, we used to phone each other up with IP addresses so we could all join the same games. Great days Laughing out loud

It's all about Monkey Target isn't it though, the other games just don't cut it.

Death Tanks looks cool, not seen that before. Worms is a great game, but it's difficult to learn and not really suitable for party play as a result, it needs a core of dedicated wormers.

I'd like to include Chu Chu Rocket, but again I think that a lot of people give up on it because it is just too hectic.

Personal FPS faves for split screen play would be Goldeneye and Outtrigger. The latter is criminally underatted.

Inability to change the controls to the ones you actually wanted ruined Outtrigger for me Sad

Yeah that is a problem, but set D2 iirc is a pretty good control setup for me, so I tend to use that one. It takes a little adjustment, but after a few minutes it starts to feel quite natural. It is odd that they didn't make the controls fully customisable.

I remember that it's a problem, but I can't remember why. It may have been to do with look inversion? Anyway, whatever it was, the one fundamental thing I (and everone I know) wanted to change couldn't be changed, so it was a complete bust.

I hope you've got the right criteria for Death Tank!

You need Duke Nukem 3D and a save file from another Lobotomy game like Exhumed (excellent title) or Quake.

And i hope you've sourced enough saturn pads and a multi-tap as well!!

But if you have, by jove, can i come?

A game i'd choose based on your criteria would be Donkey Konga, that game would even melt the heart of a rabid daily mail psycophant! So accessible, just hit the bongo ^_^ And there's a tune for most people in there too.

Multitap - check
seven pads - check
sega saturn - check
Duke Nukem 3d - check

Exhumed or Quake - Nooooooooooooo

Looks like it's time to top up my Saturn library. Smile

Go for Exhumed, if you haven't played it before, it's a quality FPS that's playable even today.

Lobotomy Software need a retrospective article, they pulled wonders with the saturn.

Great days, great times.

True. Quake was amazing in its day, and even Duke was alright. Haven't played Exhumed yet.

On a side note, so was Quake 2 PS1, but it was so late inthe console's life, few people noticed. Like Alien Resurrection.

Mashed was released on the XBox too, Mashed: Fully loaded is like a special edition version with more stuff. I just got it but have yet to try it out.

It's a great game a bit like a cross between Micro machines and Super cars 2. Get more than people involved and use the cheat to unlock all of the tracks and you're in multiplayer heaven.

I also use to love Micro maniacs. This got quite slated back in the day but one of the courses was so good that it didn't really matter. It was the course with the red lasers crossing the course that switched on and off periodically. When you reached said lasers you could try and push the other characters into it but ran the risk of them moving aside and you getting killed yourself.

The characters were also quite unbalanced in my opinion but that didn't really seem to matter. They all had their own different powerups and some were so much powerful than others.
