oh MAN!
Check out the sound (music)... it totally SEGA!
Bleeders has played it - OI, get in here!
I have a friend out in Tokyo at the moment, I'll tell him to go play it!
Cant see it here - ever. It's impossible to get people here to play games like this, plus the only "arcade" that would get it round here would be Troc.
I'd rather burn to death that play games in that dump. I remember we got the semi-sequel Sky Target when I was at Sega, nobody fucking touched it.
Anything that doesnt involve holding a gun or steering wheel you can forget trying to get these plebs involved.

Did you ever play Wing War? Ignore the beginner setting and play it on Expert. That game was/is brilliant and years ahead of its time. You hardly saw it in the arcades though
I'm sure a few select places will get Climax, Sega park in Oriental City would have been a cert eight years ago, but not now
I really hope this game rocks hard!
Yeah man we used to cane Wing War! - You know the game is actually compatible with the Sega R360? - it was never used here though, if they replaced that shitty G-Loc minigame with Wing War it would have been magic!
I love how the planes actually had special moves on the stick, I used to use the little red bi-plane - it's figure 8 loop was essential. The main gun on it was terrible but score a hit with the bomb and it's curtains XD

Don't remember the special moves, has it really been that long...
I do remember rinsing the cpu opponents apart from the UFO which always got the better of me. The great thing about Wing War was the variety of aircraft. I mean how many dogfighting games let choppers and planes go head to head and manage to balance out the gameplay?
My weapon of choice was the Soviet Yak mostly because it looked the business.
But the best thing about Wing War was the environments. For my money it is still the pinacle of arcade dogfighting because it's the only game that lets you duke it out around a city-scape without being fundamentally broken. No other dogfight games lets you weave in and out between buildings and fly under bridges with such control and ease. It truly is a masterclass.
The fact it's compatible with the R360 cab makes me sad that I never got to experience it in its ultimate configuration. With that cab it would have been something exceptional.
woo its in the troc! its fantastic!
woo its in the troc! its fantastic!
NOOOOOOOO!!!!1 - I dont wanna go in there!
I think you're going to have to brave it, the machine is fantastic!
Right up against a massive 16:9 screen that literally fills your vision, and a huge hydraulic footprint that moves the whole bloody lot about.
Also... COMBOS!
I originally posted this on NTSC whilst I was out in Tokyo -
I managed to get some good play-time with this in Club Sega Shinjuku Nishi over the last couple days and I'm pleased to say, it's retained the AfterBurner mechanics of yore. Except however, with the addition of the "Climax" function, which basically, when charged allows you to initiate the "Climax" bringing everything to a bullet-time motion, then you target a range of enemies and fire your off main weapon, which brings em' all crashing down and adds the number to your current chain. Yes, there's combos in After Burner! Basically, it counts the enemy planes shot down within a specific time-window (I think it's around 1 second), so keep shooting and the chain goes up.
It's been built on the Lindbergh board, so it looks very, very solid, sounds superb and is extremely fast-paced and fun; the perfect Sega blend.
Also, in the Club Sega in Ikebukuro, they had two ABC machines linked up for co-operatively play, but I didn't get to try that out sadly, but I imagine it's based on branch-pathing at certain points since the game prompts you for a direction to take.
It'd be nice if they brought it to the home market, but sans the moving cabinet and speakers piercing your ear-drums, I'm not sure if it would have the same effect. Still, it took most of my money anyway.
"You've just been busted by the dawg, bitch!"
I absolutely LOVE this game.
I've never really played After Burner properly, but we had a bash after playing ABC and it played almost identically... however there are layers of combos and completions and some kinda star system and the excellent CLIMAX feature.
Do you're rockin on the first level, get the cursor over the enemies, trip the missle button for each crosshair... comboing up, very Panzar Dragoon minus the charge missle and multiple camera angles.
Unsure of the combo timing, Paper got like a mid 40 combo which was totally gnarly. A barrel roll cancels the combo, and I am unsure if killing the enemies scuppers their incoming missles or not.
Anyways, to totally help you out and add to the Neo Matrixy feture, a Climax bar fills up, and starts full, hold the acceleration handle thing up, and you go SLLLOOOOOOWWWW MOOOOOOOO, and the reticule becomes alot larger so you can target more enemies with the missles, also the enemies are arrowed with a rainbowing triangle... Paper rightly noticed that a full Climax can get you from one side of the playable zone to the other in a single arc... and you tend to program that into your play.
There is a route choice and an objective mission and so forth... once you get past level 1 into the second sequence of stages, the difficulty ramps up quite frighteningly... I somehow managed to 2nd credit my way into a level that was freaking tunnels.... TUNNELS!!! in a JET! needless to say I crashed a burned monsterously... again quite Dragoony.
Looks like bonus missions and mission choices aplenty.. no sign of a card system so its old school.
£2 a pop, but totally worth it. The cab is unbelivable, the screen is right, right in your face... and if your as super fly as me a paper it always draws a crowd.
First run I was getting a pathetic 13% to 30% shot down rate on the first few stages... hadn't a clue, then got it up to the 50%ish mark, last few goes, 80%s.... I don't know if there is a dynamic difficulty thing going on, but I was making it more difficult for myself at least.
Don't think... FEEEEEL
Blud that sounds fucking WICKED! - Why does this world hate me SO much? - £2 and at Flopadero to rub further salt in....
I gotta play it! T_T

Sounds like a pilgrimage to the Troc is required. Damn shitty Reading and it's no arcade fun
.
Oh and Jib "Bullshit you can be mine"
Total tangent, but here's an exploded diagram of the original Afterburner control stick.
How much do Sega love you? This much... Just look at all the teeny weeny parts XD
Sooo. I was in teh troc. Went over to play ABC and the seat belt wasn't on it... no problem the hydralics still worked... then, the MISSILE button didn't work... so ABC in the troc is a no go people.
Also went over to play Ghost Squad, the 1 player gun didn't have an action button stalk on it... then 4 5ths through the game all the power on the floor went out and we were kind of evacuated.
Not even remotely amused.
It did teach me about shooting incoming missles down with the machine gun though... a good skill to learn... oh and that the Climax mode will shoot missles for you at the end of its cycle.
Cool didn't know that.
Partly the responsibility for this poor state of affairs is with us. I bet you didn't hang around to complain did you? It's just not done. You lose a quid in a machine and you think 'ah it's only a quid I can't be bothered to wait around and get someone to sort it out'. I bet if they were faced with lines of people waiting to complain on a daily basis then something would be done to maintain their stock properly.
The squeaky wheel gets the oil and all that.

That's Troc. It's always been like that, the power cuts used to happen 4 or 5 times a week when I was there.
Maintaining machines? Dont be silly - as long as the top lights come on and the screen fires up the game is fine. What's so ridiculous about them is that they have a community of gamers here that want to spend money and go out of their way to try and get stuff in. Every single time it's been Troc itself that drives any kind of scene into the ground...

Just spotted an ABC cab in the front of an arcade I walked past on the Strand... for those who don't like the troc.
Aye, the one next to the Adelphi Theatre, literally 30 seconds from my building!
That means we are in a Highlander'esque proximity... don't blame me if I slice your head off at lunch.
Nah you'd have to go at it Ken vs. Ryu style in the street, stopping traffic.
Everytime I play climax I love it a little bit more. Special times.
LOL XD
I'll be Ryu, just because...

Coming to PSN apparently, w00t!
Crackhead mode [ENABLED]
Thinking of playing this sat inside a tumble dryer!
That would be fucking amazing!
This game is like taking speed, ketamine and a few Es. If this is a straight arcade port I will have kittens, anyone want a kitten?
:pooomphhh: that's the sound of my head exploding!
There are a few genuine Sega games left and this is one of them. What a fitting epitaph this is to the end of Sega proper.
Is there a flightstick and throttle for the 360?
--EDIT--
What with this and Jambo Safari coming out, all I need now is a port of Too Spicy on the Wii and my world will be complete.
After Climax Burnout.
amirite?
Just need Space Harriers now.

Yep that looks like it will do the job
Want....
The Flight Stick EX is truly bloody marvellous, used it to play IL-2, HAWX and Ace Combat 6. The Saitek one isn't too shabby though and it is a lot cheaper.
...it's also 360 only, sorry about that.
It will be interesting to see if Climax goes cross platform though.
Just need Space Harriers now.
You mean Planet Harriers surely?
A new Space Harrier would be nice. Never got to play Planet Harriers.
I was playing Propeller Arena on the DC a couple of months back and that's quite a nice game, but what I really want is a port of Wing War. I really think that could work well as an online arena based deathmatch game over XBLA.
This is up on Partnernet now. Plays really well and has loads of unlockable tweaks.
Word is that we can expect an April release.
rad.
Sounds wicked. Essential purchase really
You'd hope it would be a difficult one to balls up.
Other than cocking on a consistent framerate, everything can bog off.
WHAT CAN GO WRONG?
Three words
Afterburner Black Falcon
You made that game up. It doesn't really exist.
No one has ever seen it except you.
True I have the only copy left all the others were burnt in the great game burning festival of 2008. I can confirm it is absolutely not good. I believe all the people reponsible have been taken out in the snow and shot twice in the brain stem.
*squeals like a girl*
Seems like it was actually ported by AM2, if the title screens are anything to go by. Assuming it hasn't been ghost-developed of course.
What's left for them to port over after this? Daytona perhaps, now that it's been redone in HD, but still with the low-res original graphics?
Hoping there's online co-op. One day I will work out how they do the Climax in 2 player mode.
I think they will be burnt as witches if they ever pass on that information. Daytona would be amazing! Have you seen how well it's emulated now? I still play it using a Dual Shock and the gears mapped to the face buttons, the game is timeless, the handling is STILL more fun than anything else I feel.
Not dabbled much in the world of Model 2 emulation recently. Probably should have another look, sounds mint.
Daytona is one of those games that I completed over and over and over. You never forget it, every nuance of those circuits is engraved in my brain forever. Proof positive that all you need is 3 tracks and 1 car to make a really good driving game. I prefer that approach to 800 cars and 30 tracks, which appears to be the only type of game that people are making now
. Reduce the quantity and increase the quality people. Jib has written scores on this subject already. All of it true.
I said exactly the same thing when Sega Rally came out on 360. The entire gamesTM office either thought I was joking or stupid.
Well the entire gamesTM office can get a clue quite frankly. I mean look at Forza or GT. There's no need to have all of those cars available! All it means is you end up mastering none of them, or using the same few cars over and over, once you've found a couple that 'feel' right.
Back on topic. I can't freakin wait for Afterburner Climax. Any idea on a release date?
CONTENT IS KING!
There's a sliding us oldies don't understand, the more menus and the more "things you can do" and "the length of time it takes to 'complete'" are the metrics we are working with here.
Luckily the world of downloadable content has redressed the balance, or else how would I ever be able to play Cubello?
Sega of Japan has confirmed (via 1UP) After Burner Climax's release this spring for ¥900 ($10) on PS3 and 800 (also, $10) for Xbox 360. We're still following up with Sega of America for confirmation of a North American release
